AI pilot beats human in clean sweep of virtual F-16 dogfights!

source:https://nypost.com/2020/08/24/ai-pil...-16-dogfights/

An AI pilot defeated a human pilot in a clean sweep of virtual reality dogfights, with experts hailing the victory as a significant moment for artificial intelligence, sources reported.

The artificial intelligence algorithm, developed by Heron Systems and flying under the call sign “Falco,” beat a human F-16 pilot in simulated dogfights 5-0 in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s AlphaDogfight Trials on Aug. 20, Airforce Mag reported. DARPA pitted several different AI programs against each other before letting the winner face off against the human pilot, call sign “Banger.”

Banger is a recent graduate of the Air Force Weapons School’s F-16 Weapons Instructor Course, with more than 2,000 hours in the F-16.

DARPA sought to demonstrate the “feasibility of developing effective, intelligent autonomous agents capable of defeating adversary aircraft in a dogfight.”

“We’ve gotten an opportunity to watch AI come of age [against] a very credible adversary in the human pilot,” said Col. Dan Javorsek, program manager in DARPA’s Strategic Technology Office. “The AlphaDogfight Trials is all about increasing trust in AI.”

“If the champion AI earns the respect of an F-16 pilot, we’ll have come one step closer to achieving effective human-machine teaming in air combat.”

The main strengths of the AI are that it doesn’t suffer from G-forces and it can make decisions much faster than a human would be able to. The AI also is able to make adjustments on a “nanosecond level” where the human “OODA loop”—observe, orient, decide and act—takes longer, giving the algorithm another advantage.

AI has previously been unable to match a human’s tactical thinking, but Falco was developed using deep reinforcement learning to overcome this limitation. Banger did manage to improve and survive longer in each successive round, though he failed to hit the AI’s plane in any round.

This is my real concern . It’s just a matter of time till he turns on me and kick my arse , but I pulled his fuel cell and only put it back in when I need the house cleaned, or a spotter

lmao that is so cool.

I remember seeing a lifesize floyd mayweather cutout at a hotel lobby when he had a guest appearance on the WWE that one time. I regretted not asking them if I could have it when we were checking out and the event was over but then wonder what I would really do with it other than leave it in the living room corner for the lols.

Yeah now put AI in a machine that doesn't need to support human life and you have a tech and pilot advantage

The AI is just on computer right now running idealized planes but I bet they will let it calibrate for each individual plane when its installed to account for all variations. Just like say the car ECU can adjust for carbon build up or wear or whatever changing characteristics, it will be the same thing for the plane, the AI takes it on a calibration run every now and then so knows the true exact parameters for that plane.

No surprise it can beat humans on the same plane, what I would like to see is the AI with an older model less advanced plane but calibrated fully vs a human on a more advanced plane. I bet the AI can make up for a lot of differences. Imagine china taking us out using old ass planes with AI, and billions spent on the F-35 ends up worthless.

Thanks . He’s still working on his walking technique. A few software glitches to sort out

Scary. They have robots now that can jump on wheels too. And the spider one that is ridiculously mobile. Add a machine gun onto it and game over humans.

Imagine if that AI suddenly started trying to take over the computer network.

It was a virtual dog fight. That kind of generational AI learning doesn't work in real life. The additional challenges of compensating for mechanical issues on a fleet of 40-60 year old aircraft seems insane. We are decades and trillions of dollars away from full sized AI fighters. Precision hyper-sonic missiles are cheaper and more effective anyways.

Also, I spent years working with F-16 sims, so just fuking lol at that setup pictured in the article.
