The Road is the most depressing movie I've ever seen.


I've been a huge fan of zombie films and post apocalyptic films since time immemorial, but The Road blows them all out of the water in how horrifyingly accurate its' depiction of the end of the world is.

The Walking Dead, for example, is an end of civilization show. But the sun is still shining, the birds are still chirping, fish swim gaily in the sea and the world is still full of agrarian societies flourishing and surviving while fending off the Negans of the world.

But The Road was different. Nothing like it that captures the soul crushing despair and nihilistic hopelessness of what the end of the world is like. There is no more sun. No more wild animals, no fish, no plants because the land is arid and crops cannot grow. The Earth cannot support life anymore.

I found the most depressing thing to actually be just how rare other people were in the movie. Like the only people left are murderers and cannibals and there not even a hope of redemption or survival, or repopulating. Humanity literally on its last legs.


Now, I've got a detailed TEOTWAWKI plan in place which involves an off grid cabin, hunting, harvesting and self-sustaining. But this always assumes the sun still shines, the animals still prance, the fish still swim. I don't even know if the horror of a The Road scenario would be worth even surviving through.


Recommend the film if you haven't seen it. Thoughts about surviving in such a world?

10 years ago and Viggo Mortensen is incredible in it.

I have watched that movie it was very good. Really captures how a true apocalypse would look like. Made my gf watch it and she said it was too real for her made her cry.

Yes I could survive that, basically camping in the woods and walking.

I thought the book was alright, and the movie sucked.

What platform can you watch it on?

Standard. More oversight on a movie/tv series then a book, which is always a bad thing.

There is no food. No crops, no wild animals and no fish. The biome was basically destroyed by whatever unnamed event happened in it.


That's why the world is populated by basically cannibals. There isn't anythning else left to eat, and there is a scene where the boy and the dad have half an insect each for their dinner. That is how dire the situation is.


What would you eat? Even if you stacked up perishables or MRE, that's only a finite supply. This is a more of an existential question about living per se; this is a world where the Earth can't even support life anymore.

Great movie because of the badass Viggo. Kid was ****gytime though.
