Proper tip etiquette on airplane?

I flew cross-country from Cali back to NYC yesterday. I read that industry standard is to tip 5% of total miles if it's a relatively smooth flight.

I handed the pilot $150 upon deplaning and he gave me a weird look. Did I goof? Is 5% too low in today's Covid climate?

Pls advise.

You don't tip cash op - you're supposed to add it in to your refreshment/tiny booze tab

That explains why the pilot Bert stared me when I asked for his Venmo.

I read that pilots don't make much money and count on tips to survive.

Yes if the pilot is on a service minimum like wait staff are then yes your tip was too low.
If your pilot is on salary than no tip required.

Does that make things easier for you to understand? CooL!

Very helpful, thank you.

Do you happen to know how much Jet Blue pilots make? I was row 8 so only witnessed the groups ahead of me and they all stiffed the poor guy.

I don't tip. But I do stay seated when the seat belt light illuminates.
