"American comics have actual color and greater range of art styles (for better and worse), as well as typically more playing around with the sequential art medium itself (see: Alan Moore and Scott McCloud).

Manga tends to have better "cinematography" and sense of narrative direction (due to series usually having a planned end and being a single author's branchild), and their best artists typically blow away American comics in terms of sheer detail and complexity (see: Miura and Araki)."~****

Comics for me, but none of this Marvel / DC trash.

Tough to beat Greg Capullo's run on Spawn starting around issue 18 and up to issue 100. Campbell is great too but he is the laziest artist on the planet.

Generally true. There are exceptions, like saga, sandman, watchmen, v for vendetta, quite a few of the batman series like killing joke, BM year one, TDK, etc. Marvel stuff is basically trash, where the good guys are edgy, but still 100% good, and the evil guys are evil for its sake. DC and its offshoots generally produce better stories. I can't stand anything marvel, especially MCU, its just brainless sheep cheering for superheroes who are 100% guaranteed to win either way. Reverting the snap was a massive cop out. There are no consequence for anything at all, no one dies other than the bad guys.

Then you read a manga like berserk, and realise that even the best comics are barely 5% of it in terms of quality, depth and imagination. Lots of great manga like shingeki, houshin engi, rurouni kenshin, etc. that completely beats any comic ever made.

I really liked sandman though. Beyond the SJW bullchit, it was spoke to me seeing morpheus struggling against the fates from the very start

I read the supposedly greatest comic book ever, Watchmen. It was good but it didn't blow me away, books are much better. I'm going with manga because the Japanese mogg in nerd stuff

berserk is like my favorite book series ever
i watched the 90's anime and loved it(not many door)
but i wasnt aware how epic the book was until years later

Manga all day bb.

Gantz was the last manga I was reading and that chit was cool. Bish took forever to come out with new chapters and I don't like that so I stopped reading new mangas all together.

My favorite comic artwork is actually from Dave McKean, who did the Sandmancover ITT. Sadly the guy only did a few full comics (Black Orchid, Arkham Asylum, Signal to Noise, The Punch and that's it).

Artwork
Comic artwork is often more appealing with it's full colored spread. Comic artists also more commonly experiment with their art, throw psychedelic stuff in or play with genre conventions. The use of colors also allows focussing on this.
Manga artist are more conventional in what they draw. Authors often use relatively simple character designs, but sometimes do elaborate backgrounds. When they experiment with their style it's often just relatively directly referencing/copying classic art(Berserk - Hieronymus Bosch, current One Piece - Classic Japanese art, Alien/H.R. Giger is popular with many)

Writing
Many mainstream American comics use short story arcs with a floating timeline and few references to past incidents. They also often hilarioulsy mess up with physics and powerlevels because they care more about showing a cool panel. Mainstream series often switch authors, which lead to a lot of inconsistency in style and characters.
Manga artists often devote decades of their life to a single series, which leads to overall more consistent writing. Interestingly they are not tied down by Western genre conventions and more by lose tropes and target groups, which leads to more unique creative world building. Being really dependent on one person, Manga often suffer a slow decline, with the writer becoming more and more bruned out. Often this results in a mangas weaknesses being amplified massively while it's strengths remain the same (Berserk - still amazing art, insanely slow schedule, somewhat aimless writing with sideplots seemingly mostly existing so Miura can draw cool monsters; Naruto - more simplistic character designs, side characters forgotten; Bleach - author keeps designing cool looking characters with interesting powers, but the story and backgrounds are kinda nonexistent)
My experience might be limited since I mostly read Shonen and Seinen and ignored that cringy Romance/Comedy/Highschool drama stuff, which also exists.

I would say overall Manga wins due to having more creative freedom and not being bound by genres and the author only having to answer to his editor and not some global companies. Nor is he bound to preexisting characters or settings. The best graphic novels, I have read blow the best Manga out of the water though.

On average, Manga is superior. You had a few comics that were great, but Manga overall is better and more care is given to the stories.

Today, comics are mostly diversity-driven PC trash. They care more about ticking off check boxes than telling good stories. The art is also reflective of this. Manga, so far, still has it's integrity.

A few of the better comics had SJW chit in it before it became popular - Sandman (trans), V For Vendetta (#resist). The only good modern one with SJW chit is Saga, and that comic is super top-rated. The good batman ones like TKD, killing joke, year one were pretty neutral. 300 was right wing, but its pretty brainless if you think deeper. Then you get the right wing parodies like preacher and the boys. Those 2 were GOAT, ultra violent and ridiculous, but is extremely well told.

Don't get people who like the marvel stuff, its absolute trash brain dead. From looking at the cover, you can roughly draw the conclusion to the story. Mary Sue superhero is 1000% good, with some edge, like wolverine with anger, or iron man with alcoholism. They will trash the bad guy who is evil for evil's sake, no motivation. If anyone dies, they'll get revived 100%. The only remotely interesting one is civil war, then the cap. gets brought back to life, which defeats the entire purpose of the comic. Nothing they ever do has any lasting meaningful impact on the world.

The marvel comics of the manga world is the big 3, naruto, one piece and bleach, or its modern day sucessor, MHA. Absolutely braindead, from vol. 1, you knew the protags will survive, and the good guys will win. They have better characters, and the bad guys have way more interesting motivation. There's some mystery, some of their actions have lasting, deep impact on the world around them, so overall, they're still far superior to anything marvel has shat out.

Compare the top manga, berserk, jojo, houshin engi, kenshin, FMA, etc. have much deeper, more meaningful stories than most comics, much better world building, much better fighting systems, etc. The only part where they lack a lot is the human element, which the SJW comics can bring out a lot. Sandman, V for vendetta and Saga are all comics about the human condition and struggle, which I've never seen any manga do well in. Even a lot of the batman comics bring out a lot of how disturbed bruce wayne or the joker really is. The good batman comics ultimately stories of very psychologically disturbed individuals. You rarely see any manga characters struggle psychologically other than in very extreme scenarios. The closest to that is shingeki, but its not the main story, so it gets sidelined.
