But I guess it was an adaptive behaviour in our past, for people to not think for themselves and blindly trust authority? Back pre-president Trump I didn't like him. It was because of his attitude I picked up through media. I learned not to judge people without knowing them. I have started to like him, not that I think everything he does is right but he seems to be a good guy.

The simple answer is because many, if not the majority of Americans -especially those from the boomer generation, believe everything the TV/Official Source/Authority tells them. They grew up in a period of time where the U.S. was mostly populated by mostly honest people and institutions and companies and government agencies. Therefore now that they are old and senile it would destroy their entire worldview to think that the cable news or their favorite celebrity or sports team or professor or anyone else in their establishment is lying to them. So if the establishment tells them that sticking tide pods up their anus cures COVID, they will walk around the next day with three tide pods in their rectum. They consider the TV, and those within it, their Lord and the word of God. The non-boomers/younger people who suffer this same disease do the same with the internet with the now compromised tech companies such as ********, Twitter, and all the rags they love to read like Vox, Salon, Huffpo, Wapo, Kotaku, Wired, Reddit, Etc. even though there is objective evidence those entities not only lie on the daily and are constantly hypocritical/contradicting themselves, but are straight up owned by the Chinese Communist Party. These younger people also grew up in a public school system that discouraged critical thinking, finding the facts for yourself, and questioning the narrative. So they're little robots that can't think outside the box. This is why both baby boomers and gen z are completely cucked yet the millenials and gen X who grew up in the 80's-early 2000's are largely "conservative" (or just not leftist sellouts) and that's the faction the left is afraid of, hence why they feel the need to blatantly, constantly censor all social media when anyone posts a "non official opinion".

A lot of people have built their identity around liberal politics. It defines them. They genuinely think they are good people because of the propaganda pushed out by monopolistic partisan institutions. For lack of a better term, they have been brainwashed.

When they see Trump pointing out the most basic of facts that don't align with their worldview, mental gymnastics get turned into overdrive in order to protect their ego. It forces them to realize that their deeply held beliefs, which define them, are not actually true. It is metaphorically speaking soul crushing. It gets rationalized in their brain as an attack on them.
