GoT, Lost, The Office, Ozark, etc...

Impermanence.

On a basic level, we identify with the characters, enjoy the plot and so on.

But when the show ends, and we either have closure or not, the one thing that grabs our soul and makes us **** and vomit our emotions all over, is impermanence.

These shows take a time period somewhat longer than our own, and condense them into a much shorter timeframe/reference. On the characters timescale, the change makes sense. It is over the course of time, and driven by specific circumstances. When we experience this change over the short period of time it takes us to watch it however, impermanence becomes more obvious.

It makes us bring into focus our own impermanence. Lost relationships that made sense in the moment, the transition from childhood to adulthood, the experience of death of loved ones, etc.

Taken from a snapshot in time, it is all easily dealt with. But when the firehose is open, and they all happen seemingly simultaneously, it is much more emotionally impacting.

Everything we know and understand is temporary. No matter how strong the love in your relationship, or how much you take care of your car. Those things will stop existing. Prior to them not existing, there will be a series of events leading up to them not existing, which will make it understandable and easy to “deal with”. But if you took your life, and condensed it into a week long bing session....the change taking place so quickly will hurt.

It’s like all we want to do is stop time. That is the essence of the natural human desire for immortality. I don’t want to live forever, I just want to live right now. As time goes on the future becomes right now and I still want to exist right now.

What if we could watch Pam and Jim fall in love, or Arya Stark still be a little innocent tomboy forever? Just like on the island, we are already dead. We just don’t know it yet.

Bro I have just the show for you. Hahaha. I liked this though. Captured excellently. Life is in a state of flux and nothing lasts forever; as Nelly Furtado sang 'all good things come to an end'. The knowing of sorrow and grief is what makes the good great. As the great philsopher Dolly Parton once said if you want a rainbow you have to put up with the rain. It's the price we pay for the wonder of existence.

Shows I'm loving these days are old westerns from the 50s and 60s where the common theme is law and order...

Also, this could probably be said about many books as well.
