also the thing about delaying college theres pros and cons, sure it sounds like a good idea to get more time to figure out what you want to do but you could lose out on scholarships you already had, alot of them have a time window and also a lot are geared for highschoolers to apply to

yea, unfortunately, this old school mentality is really unhealthy. Force a kid who doesn't know what he wants to do down a path and see what happens. There's nothing wrong with waiting to make a decision about your future as long as you're growing. Now if that kid is staying at home and playing COD 8+ hours a day doing nothing beneficial I agree with the dad. However, if he's actually unsure, working, and improving himself I don't know how you arrive at the conclusion, but this is a woman posting on reddit so take it with a grain of salt

I work with tons of people who joined the military and moved out when they were 17 years old, after the military they became CPD, and some of them bought a house 2 years after joining the department.
