Yeah it's pretty shocking seeing him like that. He had lost a lot of weight and was obviously wearing a wig.

He was really young when he died, 52. I also loved watching his show on PBS as a kid. I actually started oil painting last year, just following along to his show. Really fun stuff.

Is it? I have no idea. I think he found out he had it just around the time his mother died and his wife died of cancer. Yet, he was still producing his painting series and still had a positive outlook on life.

Nothing was better than a wake and bake on a Sunday morning and be mesmerized by Bob's ability to make a happy tree in his own World.....

I can see that being really fun. Although, the only waking and baking I did in the early 90s was associated with poptarts.

I have something like 65 paintings under my belt because of Bob. I never thought I'd start painting and it's all because of this great man.

Here's a seascape I did last week as practice. Felt confident enough to branch out on my own and follow my own vision. Took a year and a half of consistent practice to get to a place where I can produce paintings without too much of a reference.

*disclaimer - seascapes are tough to paint and, personally, I don't find them as much fun as painting mountains and evergreens.

He's still spreading around his positivity and inspiring people to create art decades after his death. He always spoke of his legacy. I think he'd be really happy seeing how far reaching of an influence he's had.

But yeah, modern society going down the tubes on a schit toboggan.

Bob Ross spent a lot of Fairbanks and considered it home. You can see the Alaskan influence in his art through depictions of mountains, rivers and forests... Fuark, I can't wait to go home.

I didn't realize he died at only 53. Wow, that sucks.

That's amazing! I was always great with many art mediums (drawing, sketching, cartooning, sculpting, building things, etc.), but the one thing I could NEVER excel at was painting and it just blows my mind to see stuff like the above.

Mind you I had precisely zero art experience before I began trying last year. Once you get the hang of it, you'd be surprised what you can accomplish. Keep that confidence and dedication high and great things can happen. Painting is a wonderful new hobby to add to my current life. It really goes to show you that, if you're willing to dedicate yourself and invest some time and effort, you can really learn and accomplish a lot!

Beating the devil out of his brushes with all that paint thinner out in the open for years on end, didn't do well for his health.
Sad to have seen him gone. The Goat.

I wonder that about the thinner. I hang out over an open bucket of odourless paint thinner for hours. I try and keep the window open in that room to air it out but still.

Odorless doesn't mean any less dangerous. Carbon monoxide is also odorless but can kill you nonetheless.
I would recommend putting some paint thinner in a glass jar with a seal. Then when you need to clean the brush, open the jar and clean it, then close it again. Or at least put a lid on the bucket you're using and keep it closed until needed.
Always paint in a well ventilated room as well.
Least that's how i do it when i paint. Gotta be careful. Outdoor painting is probably the best but not not always possible.

I was toying with the idea of painting outdoors but I make such a mess and use so much equipment. I have a cover for my paint thinner container but I'll start capping it in between uses. That's a good idea.

Yeah I read that as well. He was saying how he was the dude yelling at you to scrub the latrine and, once he exited the air force, he vowed never to yell again.

Bob Ross was also a manmore, as is his son. Bob is 6'2, his son Steve is 6'5.

His son Steven resurfaced recently and is now offering painting courses. If one happens to be closer to me than Indiana, I'd definitely go. He's a phenomenal painter.

Getting lessons from his son would be legit. But there are many ''bob ross certified trainers'' that i doubt are legit good.
The bob ross brand is really getting milked out for money. So i'm skeptical of some of the lessons they offer it it's from a stranger.

Yeah, they're milking it hard nowadays. I have the Ross brand brushes but I've bought a few other brushes as well. I don't buy his brand oil paint anymore. They're really pricey and you can get other cheaper brands that do the job (W&N, Van Gogh). You just have to make sure your paints are really dry and firm.
