2012 is mostly a joke on the misc, but it's a good point in the timline for when social media and smartphones became totally normalized.

2007 (iPhone) to 2011 was still a pretty innocent time, even with ********, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. Around 2012 is when virtually everyone had access to those things due to lower costs, better technology and more popularity.

Before 2012 you used technology to augment real life. In middle school we’d put up away messages on aim for wheee we were playing basketball or whatever

Then in 2012 people started using real life to look cool on the internet. People going to concerts or whatever and filing the entire thing on their phone

Yeah I completely agree. Before 2012 people used social media and the smartphone tech for very basic social interaction. I remember using my iPhone 3GS for mostly playing stupid games like Temple Run and watching silly YouTube videos. I had a ******** and Twitter, but I didn't use them at all.

In 2012 I was a senior in highschool, and my first experience with Instagram was when a girl in my class sat next to me, snapped a "selfie" of us (yeah, that was still a weird word to use in 2012) and instantly uploaded it to her Instagram account lol. I was like WTF at first, but I obviously went home and made an Instagram profile and followed that chick so she would think I'm cool and hip too. And yeah, she did and eventually invited me to her prom group. But of course everything else in the world went downhill after that year haha.
