Best way to give someone an amazon gift card?

A friend of mine shipped an item to me that i needed which came from overseas. The shipping was $100.
Now he keeps saying how he doesn't want me to pay him back, but i'd feel guilty if i didn't. So i figured i'll send him a $100 giftcard instead.

I was going to have it sent to his address, but then i noticed amazon ships it out like this.
Is it safe? cuz it's obvious it's a gift card and i don't want it to get stolen.

Or should i just send it to my own email and then give him the digital code in a text message?
He's a stubborn person who's not very responsive. I just want to clear my debt and get this over with.
Ideas?

Yeah but i'm not sure if he still uses the email that i know. I sent him an email but he didn't reply to it.
