They say join for $1 or get a free 7 day pass, but nowhere does it tell you what the monthly or yearly fee is, or if they do that auto-renew crap and keep my card number on file.

Anyone use them?

Shyt was chill and cool af, gyms are well kept. I think I was paying like $35/month.

My gym sent out the “we’re not opening until 2021 sometime” notice yesterday.

But on a serious note, the one by me out of nowhere added an annual maintenance fee. Was like $40 every March or some bs.

In case anyone was wondering, and it kept you up all night, my apartment complex has a free gym for residents with similar cardio equipment that I will be utilizing.

Mine was $20 a month. I asked for a 9 month contract because I'd be back at uni 9 months later.

They said no problem. 9 months later they said I couldn't cancel. I changed my credit card info on their billing site to be invalid. They kept billing until somehow with BS fees they said I owed $180. I told them to eat ****. They sent debt collectors after me. I told them to eat **** too. They filed against my credit report. I contested and basically told them to eat **** again.

I won that and haven't heard from them since.


In other words they can eat ****.
If your situation is different they might be an okay option. The gym was okay as I recall. Nothing special, but it got the job done. Much better than planet fitness.

These Gyms being very Machiavellian and making it hard to cancel, then blaming you for the trouble it causes you, has been going on for awhile now.

They're a good place as far as commercial chain gyms go. They vary on location of course, but for the most part, they have decent lifting equipment and won't hassle people for lifting seriously as long as they're respectful about it (i.e. not getting chalk all over the place without cleaning it up, not being a belligerent prick with excessive lifting noises, put what you use away halfway decently).

They cost more than the cheap joints like Planet Fitness of course. However, they are open literally 24/7 with key access for unstaffed hours. So you don't have to worry about scheduling anything, just go when you can make time to work out. Also, a lot of the most annoying gym goers have left places that charge more like Anytime and flocked to the cheap $10 - $20 /mo outfits, so that's a nice benefit as well.

Also, if you do go to sign up at one, just remember that there are tons of them in a lot of areas. Research the locations you could typically make your main gym (i.e. the one that gets your money even though you can use any Anytime in the country by joining one location), and cite them when you're in their office about to sign a contract. Go for 18 month contract since it has the cheapest rates, ask about potential employee discounts, and claim you know someone who got an offer for like $3 /less a month and a discount on the joining fee at a nearby Anytime. Before they have a chance to rebut that, tell then you kind of prefer their location over the other one you are considering and that you'll sign the contract if they write in that you get the better deal.

It might not seem like much, but even $3 /mo or so adds up. Imagine you stayed there for a total 10 years just doing the locked in month to month rate once the contract is up, you'd be saving $360. So you might as well talk them down a little. Honestly, once my contract is set to expire, I'm probably going to offer to sign a new 18 month contract locking me in longer if they agree to reduce my rate another couple bucks a month, and I bet they'll go for it.
