It is a mix of the two. There is another life after this one.

It was explained to me this way a long time ago. An embryo is a living thing and it gets attacked by a sperm. The embryo is over, but it advances to something else. The fetus is in the womb alive and happy but after 9 months it is getting evicted. But it is advancing to something better. A human dies after 70-90 years, but that is just the end of something advancing to another level.
