It's not like this is news though. Most US based manufacturing of electronics (RCA, GE ect.) went overseas by the late 1970's.

A big shift in the last 20+ years is that consumers don't want to pay what previous generations paid.
It was the norm to pay around 650 bucks for a TV in the late 60's. In todays money that would be 5,058.28. Good luck selling that.
Another thing is everything is made to be far more disposable than it was back then.
Now if a item doesn't crap out in a few years, it's considered outdated and tossed anyways.
