You may not like the terms of the deal, but regardless they made a deal.

We can have a separate conversation about whether or not you think that should be changed, but they earned it based on the terms of their agreement.

Military is a giant jobs program.

Difference is these people actually had the initiative to sign up even if they don’t really do anything. By default much better than a welfare queen.

You have a point and also dont have a point. If you complete your Contract then you earned it. You dont have to be a grunt toearnyour Tricare/VA Benefits and disability pay. But also, I served with some real POS' who did joined just to do the bare minimum, coast through their contract, were sick call rangers (so they could accumulate as much disability as possible) all so they could come out on the other side as financially green as possible. But i'd be 100% lying if i also said that EVERY SINGLE serviceman that claims disability ACTUALLY has one. But the same goes for every civilian who never served

Trump did an amazing job with the VA man.

I am a critic of him for sure, but he turned that whole organization around. And he gets full credit. It isn’t like someone under him did it, he is solely responsible for the significant changes they made.

I hate for the war vets (WWII, Vietnam, Korea, etc) that it took this long, but I am glad it happened.

I really wish he would talk more about that.

I think this is a good idea and a bad idea, so i'm on the fence. When people demand socialized/nationalized healthcare, I always tell them we have a socialized healthcare system in place already: the VA. Is that what you want EVERY American to have?

I'm not sure that just throwing more money at it would make it better. It totally could, but it could also just end up in some rich ass hole's pocket's. I would think that ONLY Vet's should run the VA. Staff it with vets as much as possible. Offer incentive's for vet's to staff the place. Jesus christ man some of those office workers at the VA probably shouldnt even be working int he cafeteria much less the coordination offices. God damned gov bureaucracy is getting my jimmies rustled again...

Yes and no. I get your point OP, but at the same time you basically sign over your life for a few years, even if you aren't in combat zones.

I have mixed feelings on it, but am fine with how it is.

As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong OP) when you sign your contract there is no guarantee regardless of your MOS that you WON'T be sent into a combat zone for one reason or another, and as such I feel that every service member that signed that contract has in one form or another put their life on the line for their country. So nah, not a welfare queen in the slightest.

Although I do know a couple people that abused the disability system to cash out once their contract was up, I know far more that didn't or were actually fukked up due to circumstances directly related to their service.

20 years in the military is a long time, especially considering what they put up with.

The only ones that really piss me off are the guys that retire on Friday and start a new 6-figure government job on Monday. Those double dippers are the true welfare queens.

Want to work for the corporate world? That's cool. They typically use nepotism to have jobs created for them at government contractors.

Used to work with one of those fuks. He was a retired admiral making $180k/year as a "director" on top of whatever his retirement was. Dude didn't do jack chit all day but to watch Funny or Die until he left at 1pm. He was basically paid to be a living roladex.

This was $180k 10 years ago, which is like $300k in 2020 money.

Yeah you can be sent to and active area no matter your MOS. You can decide to be a cook to avoid seeing combat and that's fine but that doesnt mean you wont be sent to afghanistan. Sure, you'll be pretty safe on a strong american post (you wont be sent to a FOB or outpost or anything) but that doesnt mean you wont have any incoming rockets/mortars/fratricide (very rare on posts but still a threat) threats.

But like you said (and i said above) there are PLENTY of ass holes who joined with the intention of abusing the system.

In a way yes. A huge chunk of the military is mindless jobs, same as most other fed employees. When you include their benefits, particularly that of retirement, they are grossly overpaid relative private sector counterparts. So yes they are leeching off the system same as welfare recipients. The amount of tax dollars spent on these retirees and veteran “disability” is enormous. Some deserve it. Most don’t.

He's talking about high ranking Officers/Senior enlisted who retire at a high rank so they get a lot in retirement. (Well over 50k).
They also more than likely draw VA disability which can be another 30k a year depending on your rating.

They sometimes have high paying Gov/Director jobs lined up for them when they get out paying well over 100k. Basically they are making bank.
