Why do tradies on this forum brag about being uneducated? (very srs)

A lot of tradies will say something along the lines of they make X amount of money without needing an education.
They will rant about college being useless or a waste of money.
Sure, some of the trades pay well relative to other job prospects that require no higher education, but the stats don't lie.
A person with a 4 year degree will average $1 Million more income in their life than a person without a college degree. Take away useless liberal majors and that number is likely closer to 2 Million. In addition educated people are more likely to have better financial habits, thus retaining and growing their net worth more than tradies/uneducated people.
School isn't for some people, if you can make an honest living without getting an education more power to you. However, bragging about making $X without an education is akin to bragging about selling yourself short.

Tradie here but I have more education that most. I would have a degree but never took the Humanities and some of the English/math courses that were required. Took plenty of Science and History. I would say my education that is higher than most people in my field has helped me a lot, even though it's not necessary. I'm a bit of a nerd and love to learn things so I do a lot of self study. Most people who say learn a skill, but that's it, may know one thing, but they can't see anything beyond what is in front of their face. Leads to being short sighted and narrow minded. They might brag about that because, well, they can't see anything that isn't right in front of their face.

If you are educated and intelligent, don's use general collective figures to judge individuals. Yes, a person with a degree is probably more motivated and is open to learning than someone who say dropped out of HS or just completed it but never went further. In the trades, I have found that most people just want to know what they need to know in order to get the job done so they can get paid next Friday. They are resistant to learning and try to act like they know it all.

im pretty sure the income with a degree is relative to unskilled stuff; not a certified tradie

carpenters, plumbers, electricians, etc. do an apprenticeship then have to pass an exam to get licensed to work on their own as a journeyman

Education doesn't automatically have to be college though. I know tradies who are far more well-read than some of the clowns I went to college with.
Here for the gains.

Here's how it works

Yes we can make great money without a formal education

I'm debt free, I was going to school for pharmacology and got offered a fast track past the 2 year wait to get into the union so I said yes.

My apprenticeship classes for 4 years applied credits to my current course of Project Management which I am about to start on (aka paid credits)

I can retire out the union with a full fat pension after 20 years so I have about 12-13 years to go, I will be 45 at that point. I will either turn around and go back into the trades with my project management degree or pursue some other venture depending on how things I'm working on right now turn out in the next few years.

I think higher education is a great thing but it's not for everyone. It's always good to have a few roads to follow for your career path imo.

Becoming licensed in a certain discipline does not equal being educated. Non educated are also more likely to get mogged in their day to day lives due to not knowing how the world works, how to present themselves, how to negotiate etc. What will a "licensed" carpenter do when he hits his 40s and breaks down besides carpentry or if he's lucky supervising carpenters? A person with a B.S. with a proven track record can transition into a variety of different industries.

I'm talking about real college majors. The average grunt picking up sawdust scraps is probably smarter than the average person with a left wing degree.

A person with intelligence and an education is mogging
A person with intelligence and no education (some tradies) or
no intelligence and no education (some tradies) are just kind of cruising through life.
Then you have the people with no intelligence but an education (leftys, welfare/unemployment recipients, baristas etc.)

Having a degree doesn't mean you actually know anything. Doesn't mean you are intelligent either. A degree for the most part is a participation trophy especially in today's standards because it seems almost anyone can get in and graduate if they do as they are told.

except often times an "education" is required as part of an apprenticeship. im unsure if its possible to become a journeyman without having done it but i believe generally speaking it takes ~ 8,000 to 10,000 on the job hours along with 1,000 hours a year for 4 years in "classroom style learning" to become a journeyman

i mean honestly i feel like your argument is a strawman. who's to say "tradies" aren't "educated"? couldn't someone get a 4 year degree and still become a tradie?

i know someone with 2 engineering degrees that was a tradie

what exactly are your "parameters" for "education"? wouldn't working and acquiring a certain knowledge gained through skillset = education? cause otherwise what is theory behind computer science for someone that works on computers? there's also an argument in here about pre-reqs and 4 years being useless until entering the workforce where you realize the theory isn't always applicable

futher, yes, part of becoming a journeyman usually entails leading and supervising other apprentices

regarding transitioning to other industries.. which ones exactly? computer science is prob limited to computers, maybe math, but isn't applicable to something like biology.

but if you wanted to take a real twist, often times the trades are actively involved in construction. so if you want to speak about construction broadly, tradie experience could prob apply there. a tradie could also start a business, so, again, i don't really give you this outright.

i MIGHT give you thatMOSTtradies are more uneducated than college peers, but i would not say that's inherent with trades or trades= uneducated

i'd throw my education up there with most anybody's and as i inched closer toward medicine i figured i didn't want to be in the hospital all day surrounded by disease. i don't want to be a cubecel either. i enjoy physical labor, more outdoorsy chit, more freedom and the more masculine culture

It's part of a larger trend of anti-intellectualism in the country. Since intellectualism values truth in the form of empirical truths (science) or rational truths (math) above all else, it makes sense for people who are enemies of truth to seek to destroy it. Because science and math have revealed certain things about reality that force us to exclude specific philosophies and worldviews, a growing number of people on both the right and the left are becoming hostile to education itself as a way to control the perception of reality. No one can change reality itself so the next best thing is to attack the perception of it.

A lot of people think they are super special due to all kinds of reasons.

But lets be fair. For you to go through all of that, actually paying and not being paid to do so, and actually did it, you must be a pretty motivated and hard working person, probably above average iintelligence. So yeah, I'm sure you are doing fine. You made the money, not your degree.

It all goes back to when we were all in school where our teachers got out that chart showing us how education correlates to success and income. Because most of them are liberal arts majors, they failed to specify and shouldn't be giving lessons on economics. So you have the tradies that were told that unless they got a degree, they would live in poverty, and then you have the graduates who were told that if they got a degree they would live on easy street. Well, we all know that isn't how it always turns out.
