'MELVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — Police on Long Island say a convenience store clerk has been charged with manslaughter following a deadly altercation with a shoplifter early Thursday morning.

The Suffolk County Police Department said Raquan Jackson, 31, entered the 7-Eleven on Broadhollow Road in Melville at around 12:30 a.m., took drinks and food, and left without paying.

The clerk, identified as Conroy Jarman, who was alone at the time, chased Jackson out of the store and into a nearby parking lot carrying one of the store’s box cutters, police said.

“The clerk and subject got into an altercation, which turned violent. The subject was stabbed with a box cutter,” Lt. Kevin Beyrer told reporters, including CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff.

One stab wound to Jackson’s torso proved fatal. Police said Jarman returned to the store and called 911. After being questioned by investigators, the 29-year-old from Hempstead was charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Police are investigating if the thief was armed and if the clerk was threatened. They are advising against taking the law into your own hands.

“If someone does steal an item from a store, we do not recommend and we strongly suggest against, and advise against, chasing the person,” Beyrer said.'

But i'm sure he had no priors, was not premediated, was in a dangerous occupation and victim brought upon the situation.

so he'll probably plead to manslaughter to make the public happy (I assume clerk was non white). Get 5 years in med security. Out in 2. Probably got bail as well which is a big thing.

The whole thing is stupid, like who tools up and chases some loser down because he stole a bag of chips from your employer? You have insurance and cops for this stuff, there's no need to get so personally invested and every employer will tell you the same. On the other hand, if I were on the jury, I'd take the a lenient interpretation of events, like if it's plausible Knife Bro felt threatened by the thief and lashed out, resulting in his unfortunate demise, that would be one thing. The law defends the criminal more often than not. Especially the wealthy criminal of any background, and the white liberal racist’s pet (criminal blacks).

The clerk did a good job and in a proper America had every right to do what he did.

Allowing criminals to commit crimes, no matter how petty, combined with lack of policing in this day and age, requires more of what the clerk did.

People who are against this seriously piss me off. I don't care if the thief stole a couple dollars worth of stuff. The problem is, the store owner could have called the police, told them someone stole a candy bar, and the police would have laughed it off and absolutely nothing would have happened to the thief while the convenience store owner, who probably has minuscule margins is out of the money. "Oh but it was just a few dollars", yeah if it only happens once in a lifetime, a few dollars doesn't mean anything, but if thieves start realizing they can get away with it, it will be a few dollars every week which will add up to significant losses for the owner. If police wont punish even the most minor of crimes, then I fully support people taking the law into their own hands.
