Is a 405 bench even impressive anymore? (srs)

Pre 2012, peoples jaw would drop if you benched 4 wheels. Now there's so many people in IG and youtube that can do it that nobody cares anymore. It all changed
Best lifts:
Bench press: 315x5
Squat: 465x1
Strict press: 205x5
Deadlift: 405x13 (conv tap'n'go with straps)

It’s bad ass to people who can appreciate it which is a very small percentage of the population. I’m the heaviest bencher I know and nobody outside a few of my friends has any appreciation for it what so ever. If you’re lifting heavy weights for validation from others it’s gonna be a sad life.

It's not as common as instagram would have you think, I can count on one hand the number of 405 benchers I have seen at commercial gyms, bodybuilder gyms and powerlifting gyms.

Think about all the people you've seen benching each time at the gym, and compare that to the number of times you've seen a 405 bench, the number is astronomically low

It depends who's doing it. If you are strict natty and not wearing a shirt, then 405 is incredible.

If you are a heavy drug user and weight like 340lbs, then not so good.

This might be the hardest pill to swallow for some people that focus on weight-class centered strength sports and stay at a lighter bodyweight.
People IRL seem to care about muscle/size, but not really about lifts. Especially because its so easy to cheat lifts in PLing (bench shirt/squat suit, wraps, half squats, etc).

You bench 405 at 160lbs? Great, that puts you in the top 0.1 percent of powerlifting, but nobody cares and you don't even have any muscles to show for it. You know who else is 160lbs and has a six pack? Runners, cyclists, just about anyone really. I used to be like that and decided to go on a big bulk and I enjoy lifting a lot more now

Oh I know its not common, but thats just the effect the internet has on you. Similar thing with dink size and pr0n, srs

If I saw a guy benching 5 plates in the gym, I don't think I would bat an eye because I've seen it so many times online, even though I know that level of strength is like one in a million

Heaviest I've seen someone go was 330x5.
He weighed about 190. Super impressive.
I workout in a commercial gym and most at my gym are intermediate'ish.

But yeah 405 is very good. Never seen someone do it IRL if I remember correctly.

Lol bro DYEL. If you bench 405 you'll look huge even if you are ripped. Everyone will be able to tell you lift if you wear a t shirt or a sweater.

Usually, but not a guarantee. There are some really small people that can do it if you look on youtube. Some combination of years of strength training (neural efficiency) plus really good leverages and maybe a lot of arching will do it.

Guarantee. Even Ufpwrlifter (if you're referring to him) looks muscular irl (havent seen him in person but I'm going with what I know).
It's the camera man, you look smaller on camera than irl. Camera creates alot of illusions.

A 405 Bench Press is still a very rare sight in real life. Sure in IG you'll see it a lot, but IG is not reality.

He is one of the people I had in mind actually. I respectfully disagree about the camera, I think a video in a normal situation (walking around in a gym or in public) shows your actual size. But a cherry picked still photo where you choose your lighting and omit any reference of size can make you look bigger than you actually are. I'm sorry, but someone thats 150lbs weighs 50lbs less than the average US adult male. Even if 2% bodyfat, there's just not enough size to be considered big/muscular/built/buff/etc

Inb4 someone posts a video of that one 160# Asian bench specialist. You know the one I'm talking about.

OP, I don't lift in public gyms often, but even with all the IG stuff I would still be impressed to see someone throwing up 4 plates IRL. Most I ever typically see in a commercial gym is 1.5-2 plates for a few reps, so anything above that really is outside the norm.

Get off the internet. Seeing people post videos of a 405 does not equal real life.

I think I've seen maybe 3 people do it since I've started lifting.

Camera, angles and lighting are a funny thing. I think Eric Bugenhagen nailed it when talking about it on one of his youtube videos.

Guys who are ripped and have muscles that are pop out look big on camera but when you see them in real life they're not that big. Where higher bodyfat guys look smaller and less impressive until you see them in real life and they are actually bigger than you thought.

Also depends on the clothes you wear. If you are a smaller guy you aren't going to look as impressive in clothing as without no homo but if you are a bigger guy with higher bodyfat you are going to look pretty impressive and muscular with clothes but without it looks like as it is, someone with muscle who is carrying around some extra bodyfat and a bit of a slob.

There are some guys you can absolutely tell that lift but wouldn't think he can throw up 3 plates on the bench and do it for reps. But it also depends on their leverages, range of motion, technique/efficiency, training style, genetics, etc.

However, if you are 150 lbs, no matter if you are benching 200 lbs or 400 lbs, 150 lbs is still 150 lbs, and is still relatively speaking pretty small, and is going to look less impressive in clothing.

Fair enough. But usually you can accurately guess how much some1 bench by looking at them. It wont be 100% accurate ofc but usually size correlates to strength. There are exceptions but I believe that if you can press 405, you'll look like you lift.
Hope I'm making sense here lol.

Agreed 100%, especially the part about clothes and higher bf%

I even read a post from a miscer that his tinder date was really disappointed in his size cause she thought he was really muscular based on his pic. But when she saw him IRL he just looked like a normal person.
I've even seen this myself when some miscers post videos of them walking around in public. They look super buff in their pic, but in their video they look like just a normal average person.

Careful lighting, angles, and not showing a reference point of size (like another person) can make a small person look huge. It's like how obese women only show pics with their head in it, srs.

You are, and I agree that in most cases that is true. But read my post above about people in powerlifting that choose to not bulk and stay in lighter weight classes.

Someone like John Haack is like ed coan levels of powerlifting greatness. One of the best ever in the sport. But if I saw him IRL I would guess he would struggle with a 225 bench, srs.

Sure 150 lbs is small, but there's a difference between 150 lbs skinny fat and 150 lbs ripped.
Yeah of course you're not gonna look huge if you're 150. But I believe you'll atleast look aesthetic.
