Back to normal: Why we must accept it won't happen

As 2020 slides into and probably infects 2021, try to take heart in one discomfiting fact: Things are most likely never going "back to normal."

It has become a well-worn phrase our politicians, officials, experts, even family, like to lean on — an ultimate, elusive prize.

Perhaps it's nostalgia for the world of January, a place where daily life more closely resembled our past decades. Perhaps it's a bid to show control, to revert to a time when change was not so universally imposed upon us.

But January is long gone, and it's not coming back. And, psychologists will tell you, that's only bad if you can't come to terms with it.

We are slowly learning if this year's changes are permanent. If work — for the lucky among us — will remain from home. If we will visit the grocery store less but spend more. If we will find wearing a mask on the metro to be just part of life. If shaking hands and embracing will become less common. If most of your daily interactions will occur via video conference (rather than in person).

"Five years' change in six months" is a common slogan for the pandemic. The disruption has upended lives in jobs lost and relatives who live alone or perhaps died without saying the right goodbyes.

Yet permanently severing ties with January is not necessarily a bad thing, psychologists say. The danger comes from hankering for normalcy again, rather than getting on with working out how to deal with whatever is ahead.

Agreed OP. The sooner everyone gets their head about the fundamental facts about this illness and the best recourse to slow its spread, the better our chances will be of returning to normal lives. We gotta fight the misinformation so that everyone can see clear.

Huh. Life is back to normal if you just don't feed the paniccels. Neat article but the only difference for my family is I get paid more and work from home full time instead of half time.

Still gym, shop as usual, have social gatherings of 10+, and shake people's hands. Sucks for those of you who act like weirdos I guess.

This. I think life has improved for me. I don't think I'd be able to WFH if this did not happen. Too many old timers who think you need to be in the office to be productive

Im guessing OP lives in one of the perpetually locked down liberal states.

I live in a suburb of Atlanta Georgia...Our Governor was the first to open back up. We've been open for months and back to normal life. There is virtually zero difference between pre-covid and post covid at this time.

The only differences are people are wearing mask and social distancing when required by a private business.

Everything is open, places are packed with people, everyone is living their normal life....and our hospitals are still empty.

It appears the south did rise again - LULZ

Of course it will. They made trillions of $ during this period. Probably planning the next scam as we speak.

The term a new normal kind of applies. I think there have been pros and cons to it. Pros are employers finally realizing that people can work from home and be trusted. Parents having to actually take time with their kids. Some people who have been stagnating business wise are forced to pivot even if they didn't want to. Lots of people deciding life is too short and pursuing things that they normally wouldn't.

Obviously a major loss of some things, most of them large group fun stuff. I can still watch sports, I just can't go to a stadium. I avoid parties by choice. Harder to find stuff to do with my kids because we can't just go to a museum or a concert and if a park is packed with other kids we go to another one. I still go out for dinner just with one other couple instead of a bunch. Had to cancel travel, which I miss of course.

I'm an introvert anyway so a lot of that stuff isn't a big loss for me. And my business had to pivot but is thriving.

Just a bunch of bishes blowing this out of proportion. Canadian cases have been increasing again since early sept yet even after a month daily death rates have yet to increase. I know there is a delay between the two but clearly the connection between covid cases and deaths is not present.

Life is back to normal in the midwest.

Go for a drive and youll see packed bars with no mask, parties outside, live music, etc.

The coasts are cucked.

we went from pandemic to casedemic.

what part of viruses mutate govt don't get? This is science 101. It's more contagiuos but less deadly (proof: empty hospitals with sky high "cases").

No one has the guts to say it for fear of sounding like trump. But they want to push the vaccine and feel like a badass demanding lockdowns and looking TOUGH.

it's okay. Everything changes nov 4th. Corona will be over
