Away: Would you leave your family behind for 3 years to visit Mars?

I can't imagine having a spouse/kids and heading out into the dark for that long with a real chance of never returning.

Any adventurous types on misc?

If interplanetary or interstellar transport is available in my lifetime, I will avail myself of said transportation. Just imagine busting nuts on another plane? Or shooting your shot in another solar system??? Splash, baby. Splash.

No spouse and no kids right now, so yes, in a heartbeat! Most of us will live a very ordinary life, if you have no obligations, no reason to not go.

A little different. Maybe if I didn't have family ties I would feel different...but I dunno 3 years is a long time.

Are we sure about that? Don't think it is too much of a spoiler to share that one of the people on the mission is supposed to try to grow plants on Mars.

If you have anyone else who relies on you/cares about you it seems incredibly selfish to me.

Mars really isn't sh*t. It's a f*cking rock with nothing going for it. If you want to screw over other people who count on you being around then it better be to go to an inhabitable planet that actually could have some real benefit to humanity.
"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Even if they solve that, I'm not sure I would go. If I were the first person to set foot on Mars, or I went there to do important research/exploration, sure. But going just so I could say I visited Mars? Honestly, that seems like pointless novelty-seeking.

**** no. I remember back in 2012 there was this mars one company that claimed they would send humans to mars so they could form permanent colony. Technology is so primitive that once you're in mars, there's no coming back

Mars just seems like a really schit planet to colonize. What's there? Possibly some minerals for mining beneath the surface? There are already companies working on drones for space mining operations. Which means the need to have a permanent human colony/presence there isn't necessary.

If on the other hand they found an Earth like planet, something with rivers, lakes, oceans, forests, etc. with breathable air. Sure. If there are animals/creatures and even humanoids so much the better. Even if it was like a 10-15 year commitment or something like that. Not married. No kids. Have parents and siblings. Have a girlfriend as well, but TBH I'd go.

The ability to go down in history as a great explorer, and possibly build a tremendous amount of wealth in the process is just too big an opportunity to pass up.

I envy the Spanish Conquistadors who explored America. As well as the Europeans that explored Africa as well pre 1900s.

Not interested. Not because of family but because I wouldn't be able to grow my business and could likely die out there. I'm down to visit a moon base until space travel becomes safe.

Edit Just thought about it now but not being able to bang new sloots every week is an insta deal breaker for me. You're either going to have to deal with your right hand or with some (most likely) tomboy/ugly astronaut chick for years. No thanks.
