In the US, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 3 men will develop cancer in their lifetime. Now, a similar rate has been reported in the UK, with a new study published in the British Journal of Cancer claiming 1 in 2 men and women will be diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives.
Um, says US men 1 in 3 (33%).

Most interesting to me was the bit about lung cancer for the US (cause of death for 1 in 18 men and 1 in 22 women). Because I had the belief that smoking rates have been steadily declining in the US.
Lung cancer in non-smokers can be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors. Workplace exposures to asbestos, diesel exhaust or certain other chemicals can also cause lung cancers in some people who don't smoke.

I exercise, stretch, eat mainly vegetables, little meat daily.

I try to get in a lot of herbs, spices too, just stuff that has vitamins, minerals, antioxidants etc.

I figure that's the best I can do.

It’s not 50%, they rounded off the “1 in x” numbers. It’s 40% for men, and a 21% chance of dying from it in a lifetime

The websites also clearly state that cancer is largely a disease of old age and 60% of all cases are diagnosed in people 65+. Considering most here are young, you also need to think about how much further technology and treatments will advance by the time this is a concern for most of us

Sitting inside everyday breathing in all the rust and chit from our hvac systems instead of actual fresh air probably isn't helping either.
beats dying at 35-40 i guess
[img]https://ourworldindata.org/uploads/2013/05/ourworldindata_life-expectancy-by-world-region-since-1770-1.png
That’s not what average life expectancy represents. Average life expectancy at birth is hugely affected by infant survival rates, with birth and the period immediately afterwards being one of the most dangerous stages of our lives. Before industrialization, infant mortality rates were far higher and that drove down average life expectancy

If you were born in the 1800s and managed to survive childhood, you could have generally expected to live a long life

Like other posters said, it's a consequence of long life expectancy.

Random mutations occur throughout life, and the older one gets, the higher the chances of mutations accumulating and eventually affecting genes that play a role in cancer.

Cancer is "natural". Most people in the past did not live long enough to develop serious ones

Yeah. Pretty funny how people keep talking about finding a "cure for cancer". Basically like saying they want a cure for aging.
