Crab boat has 500K LBS of crab in it, does the boat then weigh 500K more?

Watching Deadliest Catch the crab boat has 500K pounds of crab in the hold, does the boat then weigh 500K pounds more than it did before they put the crab in it? Just curious how much do the crab actually weigh when in the holding tanks?

You have to subtract the weight of the holes in the crabs

There is water in the holding tanks, but the crabs technically float on said water.

Actually, the crabs are almost weightless, as long as they are in the water. They are just swimming around in the holding tank. As soon as you lift them out of the water, their weight applies. The water in the holding tank is also weight neutral relative to the water outside the boat, as long as it's below the sea level.

it's all about buoyant force

if the crabs are in water, their effective weight is (land weight) - (weight of water displaced). this effectively makes them weightless since the water they displace is similar weight.

as soon as you lift them out of the water, no water is displaced, and they weigh full amount.

If you fill the tanks with 500k of crabs then dump 500k of butter on top then you got one delicious boat

What happens when you drop a wine cork in a pond?

It floats.

What also floats?

A crab boat.

Logically then, the crab boat must weigh the same as a wine cork.

That's your answer.

Always watched that show and loved it for some strange reason.

Would you guys go on a crab boat for 6 months with a guarantee of $100k? I'd tough it out.

lolwut? I don't know how a crab boat is constructed but if the water in which the crabs go into is totally enclosed within the boat, then the crab weight does apply to the boat.

But in general, boats use ballast water which is water they can take in and dump out depending on the weight of other things on the boat. This is hugely critical for freight and tankers.

i was thinking about those cages or nets that sit on the side of the boat.

Thats not how our universe's physics works brah
"The flowers bloom, then wither... The stars shine and one day become extinct. This earth, the sun, the galaxies and even the big universe, someday will be destroyed. Compared with that, the human life is only a blink, just a little time. In that short time - people are born, laugh, cry, fight, are injured, feel joy, sadness, hate someone, love someone. All in just a moment. And then, are embraced by the eternal sleep called death."

Buoyancy of objects determines their displacement. This is 3 types of displacements, boat disp on water, plus water on board, plus crabs on the water, inside the boat, on the water.

i think you're just not connecting the "newton's laws" dots here

the crabs in the vessel do not cease to have mass because they're buoyant within a closed vessel

do you weigh nothing when you jump into a pool? obviously not, you're just experiencing your "normal gravity force" being opposed by a buoyancy force

Obviously, mass is unchanged, but in the crab boat is displaced, say 3 tons of crabs go in, 3 tons of water go out to maintain displacement.

That’s like saying a bird flying in an enclosed cage on a scale becomes weightless. Box would still weigh the same even if the bird is airborne
