Why the has the general opinion of Columbus

taken a complete 360 over the years?
Growing up he wasn't someone loved, but respected and credited with a huge discovery(America) and proved the earth wasn't flat.
Now everyone hates on him, like its all his fault the Native Americans got slaughtered, if he was such a bad person to begin with, why didn't we know this until a few years ago?

Didn’t prove the earth wasn’t flat. It was well known by then- particularly among the educated- that the earth wasn’t flat, but spherical. Spherical earth goes back to ancient times. It was a later movement in the 19th and 20th century to associate Columbus with some kind of mythical widespread flat earth belief, despite the evidence.

In Napoli, lot of people are not so happy for Columbus. He was from Genoa...north of Italy always have the money and-a the power. They punish the South for years. Even today, they put-a they noses up at us like we are peasants. /spits/ I hate the north.

Was going to post this. An Ancient Greek proved it with simple a simple understanding of angles.

Columbia’s, personally, was also a terrible, terrible person. Maybe a man of his time, but treated anyone not European worse than the misc would be ok with with a dog, so - maybe we don’t celebrate him anymore?

He was a fair guy. He even tortured some of his own men for disobeying, and sex trafficking. Columbus was bad ass, but at times he was a screw up. More people should look into Hernan Cortez, Juan Ponce, Vasco Nunez, Francisco Pizarro, and many more... those guys were alpha af , and deserve their own holidays.

Second one is just propaganda, one of the most popular books to perpetuate this flat Earth and "Columbus was a bastard" nonsense was by Antoine-Jeanle Letronne. Columbus is an interesting dude, honestly. From everything I've read about him, it is entirely possible he called in a favor from the Queen to essentially escape religious persecution. Had **** all to do with a "flat Earth". NO ONE believed that ****.

What is meant above is that it was widespread belief among the educated particularly, that the earth was not flat by then. This includes Columbus himself.

I mean you could say some Middle Ages peasant with no education didn’t know (and yes there were many of these)...but then again they probably didn’t know much of anything at all....that’s not really the point here. The point is spherical earth was firmly established in academic circles by the time of Columbus. It must be remembered that the works of ancients like Aristotle and Ptolemy were heavily studied up through the medieval and early renaissance periods, and these types of authors argued for a round earth. What was unknown wasnt the shape of the earth, but the exact size of the earth, and the distribution of land on the earth. Columbus didn’t “discover” the earth is not flat in any sense. This myth was due in no small part to Washington Irving in the 1800s.
