There was large rocks on the track. He could have easily picked one up and hurled it at the cougar.

If it lands, probably kills or cripples it. If it doesn't land, probably scares the cougar off long enough for him to run away.

I know being in that situation it's a bad idea to run. I would have just backed away slowly while staring the cougar down. Maybe yelled or threw rocks at it. Worst case scenario I would have been willing to fight to the death. But I wouldn't go hiking in the woods by myself unless I had weapons with me. At the very least a knife.
