Rent help!

I’m looking for a new apartment. Might have found one, but it is more expensive than my last place. If You average about $4500 a month income, what is the highest monthly rent you would be ok with?

Personally $1,500-$1,800. I was living in $1,800 a month and finally got so sick of throwing away $24,000 a year on rent so bought a house instead. House will come out to $1,400 a month mortgage

I totally agree. I’m holding off on s house because I am only going to be in this area for another 2 years for work/school. I have another property I could live on but it is 4 hrs away with no internet lol

Highest I would pay in rent is $0.00.

Do what I did. Bought a townhome and rented out my basement for $950 and bedroom upstairs for $650. That covered my mortgage and a little cash flow on top.

Also, added a washer and dryer hook up in the basement so I could charge more.

The townhome wasn’t in great condition, so I got somewhat of a good deal on it. Added paint and new flooring and then had equity shortly after I closed.

Never pay if you don’t have too

Gotcha. Yeah renting does make sense a lot of the time like in your case. Same with mine. I lived in 5 different states in 5 years so had to rent. But if you know you’ll be gone in 2 years, I’d try to find cheapest that’ll still fit your lifestyle.

Also, just because you won’t be living in the area doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy a home.

You can always rent out the home after you leave the area. Which is what I did, property value went up exponentially since I’ve rented it out, so more capital for me to play with down the line.

Standard rule of thumb is that "rent" should not more than 1/3 of your take home pay.

Circumstances may cause an adjustment either way.

Yeah I’ve wasted a lot on rent. Average rent where I live is $2,000 per month. I have a “farm” 4 hrs away that I plan on living at full time 2 years from now. I just need something temporary

my mortgage, tax and insurance was 840 and my take home is in that neighborhood

it's nice to not have to worry about anything

No more than 10%.

If you want the experience of living in a new city and you are young, then up it to 20%.

Your rent should not be so high until you are pulling a large compensation package.
