Old houses are GOAT breh. New builds suck, lack innovative design, and can often be cheaply put together. Rather a house in the 60s built with quality material than a new house with cheap crap.

Design is cool but having a boiler for heat isn’t.

It needs a new kitchen and would need to gut the bathrooms and do some other things (Landscaping, remove paneling on walls, etc) probably at least $100k in work to make it look nice but the footprint loots great. Awesome views

That's a really bizarre kitchen design for actually cooking. I don't get it at all, style aside.

those "outdated materials" are probably a lot higher quality than modern materials though

A boiler is one of the best sources of heat lol they last for ever and are pretty efficient. They don't dry the air out, blow dander and hair around and they are a pretty consistent heat source

I suppose it depends on the fuel source. If it’s fuel oil that involves more cleaning and upkeep than LP or natural gas. Either way the process is more involved than a forced air furnace.

As a homeowner when you have a boiler you need to somewhat know how it operates. Especially when you live in the middle of nowhere.

Old houses are like old cars. Unless someone did a restoration on every nut and bolt with high grade modern materials, it's going to be a maintenance nightmare.

I disagree. I think the mega builders who throw up homes cheaply have given modern construction materials and methods a bad reputation, but you can get quality materials even today and construction methods have improved over the past few decades.

My home is 5 yrs old. The roof and walls are build of SIPs, the basement walls are precast concrete with a waterproof coating and hydrostatic pressure panels, the roofing material is standing seam metal, heat and ac is geothermal with an ERV, siding and shingles are James Hardie cement board. You don't get any of that in an old home. I had a traditionally build 3100 sq foot home with natural gas heat for 16 years before we build our current house. We're more than double the size now but our utility costs are less than half as much, and that's including the electrical costs of the pool. Modern homes can be really well built.

I know you can build with cheaper materials than were available 30 or 50 years ago and that dimensional lumber is often of lower quality, but over all, modern homes are safer, more comfortable, and much more energy efficient. The thing is, to build better, you pay more. That's the cost of building exactly what you want. A "used" home is a better value in most cases, but if you have the money and want to build your dream home, you can far exceed the build quality available 30 years ago. If I were to build another home, I'd probably use 2x8 stud outer walls with rock wool insulation and Zip panel instead of OSB sheathing. That would save some money over of SIPS and let you modify the design on site while trouncing old construction specs.

All that said, the linked home is really nice looking if you can get past the nausea inducing fisheye lens effect on all the pictures.
