The stock market is run by a local exchange eg London Stock Exchange
Many factors effect prices e.g. Apple. Today sales are good, new iPhone due etc, this makes people this the company will make money hence it would be good to hold a share in the company and profit from this value. However, say tomorrow all iPhones stopped working, then there is a loss of value and loss of potential future income hence the value of the company falls.
The stock market is important as it can be used as an indicator of how well a country is doing, If companies are making lots of money, their value goes up, it indicates people are buying their goods and service so money is in the economy etc
Of course all of the above is much more complicated but that's a start.

Who runes and controls it: The juice. Also multiple exchanges manage transactions and the SEC oversees it all to enforce regulations
What causes prices to change: Change in demand

It goes UP and DOWN. That's it all you need to know.
Average person: earns money when it goes up. Losses money when it goes down.
Beginner investor: Loses money when it goes up. Also losses money when it goes down too.
Experience investor: Makes money when it goes up. Also makes money when it goes down.
...and Exp profits equates to Av + Beg losses minus brokers fees. That's it! You are welcome.

i prefer to buy metals as close to the AISC (all-in sustaining cost) as possible
negligible downside risk, however you some times have to sit out of the market for a bit when dummy bears run prices up
pretty much all stocks are overpriced rite now

I'm not even going to attempt to explain the market but let me explain a retards version a specific stock.
Lets say you have a business and need money to expand, to increase your budget so you can make a profit, etc. . So you sell 'shares' of your business of it to investors. As the value of your business increases. So does the value of those 'shares' you sold. So say you sold them for 5$ per share. In 10 years if your doing well it might be $20 or even $100 per share. If your investor chooses he can sell his shares for a profit to whomever wants them. Or perhaps he hangs onto them predicting further growth.
Some companies also pay a dividend on that share. IE lets say you pay your shareholders $1 per month or per quarter for each share they hold. A guy that owns 1000 shares in your business will get $1000 per month or per quarter (depending on how its structured). Some companies reinvest money purely on growth so they don't pay a dividend. Some invest a small portion on growth and pay out a dividend to investors.
So technically if you own a stock in a company. You own a piece of that company. When the companies value goes up along with the stock the more money the stock is worth. If the company's value goes down, the less money that stock is worth. Sometimes a company can go bankrupt and your shares be worth 0. Sometimes it can go to the freaking moon.
Probably a poor explanation but it should give you an easy to understand idea of what a specific stock is. From there draw your conclusions on the market, why it goes up and down, etc. Historically the market increases an average of 7% per year. Regardless of gains/losses.

It´s a meme that the stock market always go up over time. Over the last 100 years that has been true, but at some time we will reach the top. It can´t go up forever, and I´m thinking we are close to the top now.
Share price is dictated by supply and demand. Lots of people buying, price go up. But one big sell order can also drop price and flush the order books.
Stock market is not that much correlated to the actual economy anymore. Lately there have been many signs which imo suggest we are entering a long bear market.

OP also be aware there is many stock exchanges not just one.
The difference is they have regulation and rules that are meant to protect investors. Say some chinese companies do not trade in New York Exchange because their accounting does not disclose according to their rules. Shares of this companies trade in a different s xchange. Nothing wrong with the company just different regulations.

The simple way I always looked at it was like legalized sports betting but instead youre betting on a company. Obviously it's much complex than that but this is the simple way I explain it to a young teenager. Especially when dealing with futures exchanges.
