Sup misc,

Needed help deciding on the next breed on dog to add to the family. Some info about my situation.

-New father.
-House with a little over .5 acres. Neighbor on one side only and fairly far away.
-5' chain fence.
-Protection minded.
-Previous dog owning experience includes a Labrador, GSD, 2 APBT and a Cocker Spaniel.


I am in no rush and happy to put a deposit down now with the intention of adding the puppy in the next 12 months or so. The further out within that time frame the better frankly. I can commit to daily exercise, the dog would more or less never be left alone, would primarily live inside and we can easily afford vet care and food for a large breed dog. We currently have one senior dog (Cocker Spaniel) my daughter will be a little over 1 year old by the time we added the puppy. I have narrowed it down to the Doberman, Rottweiler, Central Asian Shepherd and Fila Brasileiro. The CAS and Fila both have extremely high protective drives, my new job has me away from the house for 24 hours at a time and with the recent events in our country I would appreciate a dog with a more protective instinct. That said I don't want to sign myself for something I cant handle and I live in a safe rural area about 40 minutes outside of Raleigh NC anyways.

I located and reached out to several breeders. Rotties seem to be around the 3k mark, local Doberman breeder sells their European Dobermans for around $1800. The CAS was $1500 and the most reputable breeder I found was in California. The Fila was also around 2k. I know there is a miscer on here who owns a couple German Rottweilers and speaks highly of them. Anyone input is appreciated. I would prefer to avoid a GSD as the working lines around here are incredibly high drive.

Out of the choices I think a rottie would best suite your needs.

Currently have this pupper. (Great Pyrenees) Excellent protection dog with a very deep intimidating bark, incredible with humans, independent.

Only downside is highly difficult to train. Easy enough to take for walks on leash but I wouldn't let him off leash will just run off and do w.e he wants.



Bernese Mountain doggo would be an excellent choice as well.

Im located in the Raleigh North Carolina area. Have found several reputable working line Rottie breeders.Beautiful dog srs. They are a nice breed, I am looking for something that leans more towards the protective side. I 'm even open to potentially doing schutzhund but didn't want to over commit.I've owned two, both responsibly breed. One Razors Edge one Gator Mouth. Its time to move away from the breed. both were pretty protective but the APBT was not bred for human protection/guarding. I feel its time to move away from the breed.Amazing do it all dogs that are way too high energy for me.GSD's are wonderful but I am looking for a family guardian. This brought me to working line GSD's and I think they are just too high energy and drive for me on daily basis.

Thats a great area, your Rotties will do well here. Gets fairly humid in eastern NC but its not too bad.

Seems like most of the Rottier breeders here run Serbian lines. Not sure whats up with their faces/muzzles but im used to the German look.Sorry missed your post. Im leaning Rottie but did really like the Euro Dobies I saw here.

My cousins owned a male Great Pyrenees. He was massive, great dog. They lived out in Kansas and he had a huge property to roam.Heard they are the most intelligent breed. Apparently Rotties are up there too.

Rhodesian ridgeback is the only answer. Good all round dogs they will protect your family and are good with sprogs.
They are smart enough, look mean as piss and they have a racing stripe down their back.Oh, and did I mention they were used to hunt lions in Africa??

I like bullmastiffs. Lazy but protective.

Airedales are underrated too. Some great working airedales in Germany.

Great dogs, I had considered them as well.
Looked into both breeds. Heard working Airedales can be great protection dogs, good with kids and very smart.

Considered the Bullmastiff and Boeboerl but was a little turned off by the slobber (something the Fila admittedly has as well) and shorter lifespan. Bullmastiffs are still oj my mind a bit, I can exercise a dog everyday when Im home but not sure about my girlfriends, a lazier dog might not be bad and I know they are extremely protective.

Of the list you provided, I would say Dobermans but if you plan on cropping the ears like in the picture, it seems to be a pain. But if you're afraid of a GSD energy level, I would say Doberman's have an equal amount of drive. I own a GSD and never thought his energy was too much. A lot of mental exercises and some physical activity every day and he's set, plus they are alpha and aesthetic as ****. Good luck with whatever you decide though.

Check out beacerons. They're a large part of the doberman stock.

Was at a dog show and and there was a studly airedale. Almost as big a dobe. Their coats are like rough doormats though, not soft.

I had heard that about the ears. The wrapping must be changed semi frequently for nearly six months and its possible to mess them up. Kinda steered me towards the Rottie. However I feel competent enough to properly do it, seems like a simple task just a pain to do often and the prospect of messing it up.

Was wondering out working line Dobie energy, figured it might be up there. GSD's are amazing and I would love a working line one, they are very pricey around here and the drive is crazy. I appreciate the insight though, I feel like I could meet those demandsI'll look into them more, have only seen pictures. Looked at GS but dont think they are for me. Yeah I have really liked the Airedales I have seen.Yeah was wondering about that. Not sure why those lines gained in popularity but its almost all I can find around here especially when I specify "working" lines.

Husky: the most aesthetic, sloots love these chads

GSD : the most intelligent and loyal/protective ( literally GOAT companion )

Dobie : stronger and more intimidating than a shepherd, close to it in intelligence, least aesthetic choice but still aesthetic

giant schnauzers are cool. my aunt loves airedales and has two of them and they were both crazy af not necessarily in a good way. people seem to like them though, so maybe i just have a bad anecdote

Great option for some, but no one is afraid of a 60lb mutt. He wants something very specific, people rarely give up large dog breeds unless they aren’t trained well

Seriously considered one. Breeders I found sell for around 4k and would have to ship to me. Absolutely wonderful dogs though.

Good point about insurance, they are relatively unknown.
