I’m a dog lover and I don’t outright hate pitbulls. I’ve met friendly ones. But idk where to stand on it. How much can a good or bad owner influence the breed?

Good loyal dogs that have a genuine, albeit small, chance of snapping.
Statistically they're more dangerous than other breeds, but if you have a pet pit bull there's a 95% chance it is going to be completely fine towards you as the owner. The problem with them is they tend to be aggressive towards other animals (think dog parks - big problem) and the males can sometimes have dominance issues if you don't cut their balls off or check their behavior from a very young age. Female pits are loyal af. Some of the sweetest dogs I've ever met have been sheltered female pits that were abused. Once they find a human they can trust, they do anything for your affection.
I think a pit bull owner has to be a certain type of person. Definitely have to be an alpha. I see these slooty single “dog moms” trying to tame their pits and it’s abundantly clear they have zero control over their animal. Then again you see a guy like Caesar Milan who can get those fuker in line at the snap of his finger.

the only reason pitbulls are more represented than Akitas on those reports is because there's 4 million pits out there and barely any akitas

If you want security, do some research and buy a combo of 1 guard dog breed (Bull Mastiff, Rottweiler, etc.) and one watchdog (German Shepherd, Doberman Pinscher, etc). If security isn’t your priority, buy a golden retriever and enjoy the love. There’s no reason to buy a breed like a pitbull unless you are very experienced, and trying to save it’s life.

There's 4 million pitbulls out there and like what? 50 attacks a year? the odds are about 1 in 100,000
The difference is when they do snap, they can cause immense damage. They are insanely strong and tenacious. The only reason they're over represented in those stats is because of the huge volume. If there was 4 million akitas or rottweilers, they would inflict same amount of damage

Of course the breed has the ability to do a lot of damage if not trained.
And that's the problem. Most people don't train their dogs or give them enough attention that they NEED.
People get pitbulls and spend more time taking pictures, playing with them, and only teaching them sit and paw. Play a little tug of war with a rope for 20 min and they think a fukking strength breed is happy while they go back to sipping on wine and watching netflix.
People need to be in command of their own dogs. Especially powerful breeds. When you see a women walking her pitbull basically getting dragged by it, run for the hills. That's full on protective mode. If you get a pitbull you need to train it thoroughly, take it on LONG walks, and actually play with it. Drain its energy. A tired dog won't try to randomly eat a dog walking by.
If someone trains a pitbull well and is the leader of their family and dog, then a pitbull is an absolutely beautiful dog and great family dog. But not many people take the time to do that anymore.

Deciding your pet is going to be a pitbull is like deciding your mode of transport is going to be a powerful motorbike. No it's not necessarily a problem but you need to have the right skills to do it safely.

Inb4 Ruby speaks highly of her pit mix.
No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
