Don't know anything about ARs. I'm looking for reliability and bang for buck, not too high priced. What's a good price to get something nice? Also it'd be better if it was a kit he could put together, I think he'd like to put it together himself.

I am gun noob but from what i've gathered there are some decent entry-levels to look into: S&W MP-15 Sport 2, Ruger 556, Springfield Saint, PSA, Aero.

You will win the award for greatest son ever if you get him a LaRue ultimate upper kit.
https://www.larue.com/products/larue...-15-upper-kit/
He can then get a lower locally or you can get him one.

It'll be an expensive paper weight without ammo. look at availbality of .223 or 5.56
I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

That’ll be one hell of a birthday present, do it.
Most of the rifles already mentioned in this thread would be solid choices but if you think that he’d really enjoy building one himself, an AR build kit from PSA would be an awesome idea.
You’d also need to buy a lower receiver to complete the build, but you probably know that already. As long as you don’t buy some bargain basement lower, a PSA build would be a solid first AR.
You’ll probably get more help here if you let people know what your budget is.

Monitor r/gundeals for an assembled upper and lower in 556/223. Put em together and you're done. Will probably save a few bucks too for a nice trigger "Larue."

good luck finding anything under $2k now.
“The Misc. is a stone-faced Uncle Sam with Popeye’s forearms and a cocked pistol in each hand. It’s a screeching bald eagle with a foreign Bad Thing in its talons. It’s everything that defines America’s bro culture, magnified and weaponized. But it’s deeper than that.“

I gotta figure out how the laws work as far as gifting a firearm. Could be easy, could be hard. I don't want to go the gift card route.

If looking at the Ruger AR-556, get the MPR (multi purpose rifle) versions. Model number 8514 for the 18in barrel or 8542 for the 16in barrel. Comes with a better trigger, barrel and furniture.
Also picked up a Holosun 403 and SIG Romeo5 red dot sights, around $120... again pre co-void prices.

A PSA build kit + lower falls well under $800, and the S&W M&P Sport II in 5.56 has been popping up for ~$650 online too.
Just don’t waste your money on a bargain basement rifle like a Radical, Anderson, etc. They’re cheaper, but you absolutely get what you pay for.
