Here is a painting I made this weekend - sharing with you all on this Sunday morning

I had this scene in my mind yesterday and wanted to get it out onto the canvas, so this was really impromptu. I finished this one fairly quickly (under 2 hours) so it isn't the greatest, but I'm getting to a point with my painting now where I can relax and just enjoy rather than fussing about getting things "right."

As I've posted in my other painting threads, I only started painting a little over 1.5 years ago with no previous art skills. My creative endeavour and passion has always been and will always be music creation and production, but it's really fun to get into painting as it's always something I wanted to try.

My message to you all is the following: if you ever wanted to try painting but find yourself being limited by beliefs that you "can't do it" or that you need some kind of special innate skill to do this, that is completely untrue. Use my painting threads as evidence to the contrary. If you're willing to dedicate a bit of practice time and adopt a positive, confident outlook on the entire endeavour, good things will happen.

Painting truly opens all kinds of other doors. It does wonders for your sense of self-esteem and confidence, and the general belief that, if you put your mind to something, you can absolutely do it.

LOL I'm into the music stuff and kinda getting into art (used to draw a little years ago).

Been coloring this mandala with watercolor brush tipped markers have to be super patient.

What I like about both is that you can kind of get lost in them.

That and just feeling confident and comfortable with it too.

I was playing guitar the other day and just almost marveling at the idea I felt so comfortable playing.

Made me think of when I first started and how it felt weird and almost like a strain playing.

I've seen a lot of other stuff you posted it's all awesome, mirin' that Bob Ross rustic scenery.

Always wanted to do things like old barns, maybe even castles, just scenes that strike me as almost archetypal.

Painting buildings was initially a struggle, but once you begin understanding the angles, then it's a bit easier. I was thinking it might be fun to paint my own album covers. That would solve that issue.

I'd recommend you give it a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Both my girlfriend and mom are painters, they always blow me away as do you - was never my thing. I was always more adept at performing arts - singing/instruments etc.

Same. I play around a dozen instruments and built a recording studio in my basement where I compose and record my music. That's my main passion. Learning to paint in my 30s is definitely an interesting endeavour. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks after all?

I don't do art for a living, which means I don't have to cater to anyone as it doesn't pay the bills, so I can do whatever the hell I want, let the artistic process flow naturally, and be completely self-indulgent. I've written songs that were upwards of 20 minutes before (think progressive rock).

Great work. I love landscape paintings and watching the artist's process. I keep toying with the idea of getting in to it but it seems daunting and like it would take an inordinate amount of time to get anywhere near the level you're at.

Not at all! What you could do is watch a bunch of The Joy of Painting episodes and really study how Bob does it. Honestly, I watched that show for an entire year every single night before bed to help me get to sleep. I still do. It really just knocks me out. Bob is so soothing. In a way, I acquired my theoretical grounding that way. I started really getting a good sense of how he does it and all of the 'rules' inherent to that style of painting (wet on wet). A thin paint sticks to a thick paint, you need to put a lot of paint on your brush for highlights, how to blend, brush mixing colors, etc. All of these little things. I'd suggest you start there. When I tried my first painting, I really followed along with an episode of TJOP. I found it really enjoyable.

Oils are a very, very forgiving medium. It's hard to mess up so badly that it's irreparable. Bob also liked to say that "we don't make mistakes, just happy accidents," and if you internalize this and don't take yourself too seriously, it's really fun. He also said "trees can hide a multitude of sins" and I've experienced this many times.

Nice. Same here I play many instruments, and can usually 'fake' it pretty well on the first try. What do you record? I do more rock/blues type stuff for my personal stuff, but have done some original scoring for professional work.

I have a few projects I've been writing for over the years (half my life, really). One is more of a folky singer/songwriter thing. That's the main music I record. Then I have two bigger projects, one more of a post-rock/post-apocalyptic sounding one with lots of layered, delayed guitars and such. My other project is an eclectic 70s-era English progressive rock meets world music meets dark pagan folk style. It's really hard to categorize. I've also written video game music and electronic music as well. One of my favorite music styles is 80s thrash metal and progressive metal, but that's hard to do without a band. I started a doom/stoner rock project I was writing for and doing all the recording myself.

I also forgot to add drums and every other percussion you can imagine. I play drums almost every day.
I actually play drums to warm up for lifting believe it or not. It's really a great way to warm up and loosen up your limbs.
