Maskcels - what is the endgame for mask mandates?

I'm not going to bother debating the scientific merit of mask use in this thread. I've posted my positions about that numerous times on this forum.

Let's just assume that cloth/disposable, none N95/respirator style "masks" really are substantially effective in minimizing the spread of COVID-19 from asymptomatic people. What I want to know is, what is your endgame for mask mandates. What benchmark would we need to reach in order to let people walk around public without face coverings of some sort? Would mass COVID-19 vaccine availability for the general public be enough? A certain percentage of people being known to get the vaccine? If you get the vaccine personally, can you carry a card or something verifying your vaccination status and not have to wear masks anymore? Better therapeutic drugs established as well as vaccines?

I ask this, because there seems to be no clear end in sight to the mask mandates. We don't even have a general benchmark of progress against COVID-19 that would allow us to move on from the mask mandates, let alone a firm benchmark/set of benchmarks. My state government recently came out and said the actual scientific merit of the mask mandates has nothing to do with the government's right to enforce them, and to get over the idea of thinking that would ever matter regardless of what data/evidence may ever be presented.

The governor's most recent word on his mask mandate was to flat out say the masks are "here to stay" and "will be one of the last things to go" when asked what specifically would allow us to get rid of them. Normal folks maskcels I know IRL have told me they think we need to keep masks around even well after a vaccine, and it appears that anything short of outright glibal extermination of the virus would convince them for sure that it would be okay to let go of the masks.

Masks are like the TSA, offering the illusion of protection but in reality the amount of protection it offers is finite. It's basically about control and making everyone feel safe
