TIL: Alt Right vs. Alt Lite
It wasn't anything I was planning to do with my day, but somehow I ended up in a back and forth with my ex around current events and election related tensions.
My ex says Joe Rogan is alt right, which was funny to me since he gets called a lefty around here. To which I replied that it seems like anyone who doesn't agree with "your side" is labeled as being on the other side...in general, not just him.
Made me curious how the term alt right is defined and what it is supposed to mean:

Made me curious how the term alt right is defined and what it is supposed to mean:
Thealt rightis an extremely loose movement, made up of different strands ofpeople connected to white supremacy.
Alt rightersuse terms like “culture” as substitutes for more divisive terms such as “race,” and promote “Western Civilization” as a code word for white culture or identity. They tend to avoid explicit white supremacist references like the “14 words,” a slogan used by neo-Nazis and other hardcore white supremacists. While alt righters share the sentiment behind the “14 words” they’re more inclined to talk about preserving European-American identity.
Another aspect of the alt right subculture is its connection to the online world of misogyny known broadly as the “manosphere.”Men in this movement believe they are being stripped of power by women and pro-feminist social structures. They also are hostile to women on a personal level, with some believing that women are objects to be possessed and used for sexual gratification, while others resent women for their own inability to attract them or to form meaningful relationships with them.

In 2015 and 2016, a number of people who considered themselves part of the alt right were not white supremacists, but held certain views that aligned with white supremacist ideology:they were anti-immigrant, anti-globalism, anti-feminism and believed that the left and/or liberals are actively working to destroy American culture.
These people became known as the “alt lite.”

These definitions you have found seem to be made up by someone with their political motivation in mind. I don't believe even 2% of the population in any country fits into the first category "alt-right"

I feel like I have mostly stayed in the same place while the loudest wing of the Democratic party hasn't so much just moved to the left as they seem to have moved to this shaming/bullying thing that I'm not okay with. Not agreeing is fine. Backing up your argument with facts is better.
Invalidating other people's right to have a dissenting opinion is a dead end for a democracy.

Right and Left are meaningless terms. You can believe in a socialist society with racial ideology as well.

I did try to point out to him that labeling and suppressing dissent is a useful tool. I don't think it sank in.

I don't know in what universe you could consider Joe Rogan somebody from the "alt-right", although the term itself is very loosely defined and is used very liberally (pun intended) to define a movement or group the other side considers racist.
When I think of alt-right, I just picture a bunch of internet neckbeards and edgelords that are bitter towards women and basically just act/troll in ways to rustle liberals and lefties. Basically provocateurs and the embodiment of everything that the left/liberals hate, on the internet. In real life, they are practically not relevant/non-existent.
Joe Rogan IMO is more centre-left in terms of his views. He says some pretty stupid chit sometimes but you can at least say he doesn't have TDS and is open to listening and criticizing both sides.
