I can't believe people legit think the earth is flat

I don't understand how they believe this is a more rational conclusion than the earth being round

Why would every single authority on the planet conspire to deceive the masses of something so innocuous. HOW would they even go about doing so when they can barely coordinate a response to a virus

Why do the sun and the moon appear to be spherical

Flat earth originated years ago on 8chan as a means to muddy the waters on legitimate talking points. Over the years some off kilter people/retards got sucked in, but ultimately it was meant to poison the well.

I already understood your point the first time you posted it.

Whilst I appreciate your open mind I feel as though this is a lazy line of reasoning and undermines any sensible discussion. From this perspective ANY piece of second second hand or indirect information has the potential to be manipulated and "hurr durr naive normies believe what they're told".

My mind is open to ideas however my gut tells me this is not the hill to die on.

I agree with the general sentiment, but the earth is definitely round. You can do the same experiment Eratosthenes did to prove it and calculate the circumference. He noticed a stick placed in the ground in one place cast no shadow at noon (the equator) whereas a stick placed in another spot 500 miles south cast a shadow at 7 degrees. This could only happen on a curved surface. 7 degrees is ~1/50 of 360 degrees. 500 x 50 = 25,000 miles. Go and do that with a stick, you don't have to travel 500 miles, it will still work wherever you are. Then you will know for sure via experience.

There are also obvious signs the earth is round which navigators noticed millennia ago, like different appearances of stars.

There's lots of research and knowledge out there that no ever works out on their own. You look at what others have done and you make up your mind based on science and facts. If you had to be present for the discovery and work of every single thing you know you wouldn't believe anything and wouldn't be able to get through your day. My car burns gas to drive the pistons and crank shaft etc etc .... I have no idea who invented it or did the leg work but I take for granted that they are right and that my car works. I don't know for sure what's going with the gas or how it burns but seems to make sense and my car goes down the road so I believe it. If I had reason to doubt it I would but I don't. How would you ever believe anything otherwise?

You have to account for the curvature of the earth (and the refraction of light) when sighting over a long distance or the math doesn't check out.
