Or do you only know someone that was "deployed" and sent back?

I was waiting on my car at the shop once, and this old man sat next to me. He was so friendly. He was a WWII Pilot (not sure which one). He was really humble. One of the nicest guys I have ever met in my life. I wish I could talk to him again.

no but i went to highschool with the grandson or great grandson can't remember of erwin rommel. we were desk buddies lol in grade 10 science. it's interesting cause our highschool is called sir winston churchill secondary

Aunt's husband Freddie arrived in Normandy on June 7th with 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. He surrendered to Americans in Austria. Later moved to the US and worked as an engineer. He was a great guy.
Ex's step father was a merchant marine sailor and they beached their ship at low tide to be unloaded on Utah Beach on June 7th as well. Had lots of stories of dealing with the u-boat wolf packs.

My grandfather was aseabeein WW2 in the Pacific. He helped build runways on islands for planes to land and went on to help clean up the damage caused by the nukes in Hiroshima. He died when I was young though, so unfortunately, I didn't get to ask about his experiences in WW2 that much.
I remember I also interviewed a man who was a pilot in a bomber in WW2 for a project when I was in 5th grade. He told me all about how they bombed Germany and the dangers of it. He was very lucky to survive, as a great many pilots didn't make it back from those bombing runs. I don't remember the numbers but I think it was like only 1 in 5 made it back. There's a documentary on YT you can find about the Memphis Belle with actual footage from inside the plane that was taken. Every crew was given 25 bombing missions and if they survived all 25, they were sent home after that. The Memphis Belle made it back on their 25th mission.

My grandfather was a pilot against the Japanese during WW2. That’s where he first trained to be an electrician.

Both their fathers fought in WW1 too, one was buried alive and gassed (his hair went completely white at age 19) and the other one lost an eye.
Crazy chit really when you think about it. I have done nothing remotely comparable in my life.

I met a few. One was a fighter pilot and said he was 16 yrs old at the time. A few were at Battle of the Bulge and some in the Pacific. I met a 96 year old vet today but he has alzheimers and didn't remember anything. Not many are left.
What's truly is amazing is that some of these WWII vets have met american civil war vets in their lifetime. So I may have shook the hand that shook the hand of a Union or Confederate soldier.

Great grandfather on one side was one of the airborne troops who dropped on d day. One the other side of the family lost two great uncle's on the eastern front. One was awarded the Iron Cross that's still in the family.

My grandpa was an aircraft mechanic first in CA then in france after the d day foothold was established.
His best friend was infantry in the north africa theater then into italy.
Both dead now, the friend about a dozen years ago and my grandpa 4 years ago. I've acquainted with a number over the years, but those two were constants in my life growing up.

My Opa was a truck driver, and trained soldiers in the war. He didn't serve on front lines or anything, but certainly did his part. His house in Holland was bombed, killing his mother and a several siblings.
Oma died two years ago. Opa is still going strong at 93.

My grandfather was in the navy in the pacific theater. He never spoke about what he saw. My great uncle was with Patton in Africa, Italy, Normandy, all the way to Berlin. Was wounded in France. In contrast with my grandfather he never stopped talking about it. Left me and my brother a lot of patches, military decorations, etc.

My Grandpa, at early stages of war he got arrested by soviets and sent to siberia for slave labor with many other poles, spent there 17 years before he was allowed to return.
