You already have the rules of the federal, state, and local government, and you're adding in an HOA on top of that?

Just LOL@giving your money every month for the privilege of being overseen by some property company who continues to milk you long after you overpaid for your chitstain generic McMansion.

Or worse, you move into a 30 year old "established" neighborhood with your neighbors Karen and Timothy on the "board", rejecting your application to put in a pool.

I get it that some people want to be sure their neighbors follow rules, but at the end of the day, if you're paying more than $20, you're getting ripped off. Even then you'd better be sure as fak that they don't have draconian rules or the ability to raise HOA fees on a whim.

We have HOAs here that are $200/month for a detached house and you don't get chit for it besides a community pool and tennis courts. Not exactly sure that's worth $2400/year.

I plan on moving out in a few years to the woods so I won’t worry about it then. But I like my hoa while I’m in neighborhood because it protects my property value. Built the home 6 years ago and it’s gone from 360k to 525k so far. A lot of neighborhoods in my city have issues with some houses never doing yard work and letting it turn into a jungle, people parking cars on their front lawns, saw one house where the entire front yard was turned to dirt and they turned it into a mini pumpkin farm etc.. people who are worse then catbrah for neighbors.

And this happens from weird hippies in even nice neighborhoods.

it sucks but its absolutely necessary because some lazy fks will move in and devalue the whole 'hood. the houses are packed together like sardines these days so it devalues the houses beside them. i dont live in a HOA anymore though, **** having neighbors especially in todays society.

I live in a nice arse neighborhood. The price tag alone prevents the plebs.

We don't have an HOA and every keeps their yards tidy as fuark.

I don't see why people feel the need to pay $100+/month to enforce some rules that decent people already follow.

Don’t paint your place pink / orange, mow your lawn, don’t keep junk in the yard, keep your animals quiet and controlled, and generally don’t be an @sshole neighbor and you will never have an issue with your HOA.

If I lived in a subdivision with <1acre lots I would greatly appreciate the benefits of an HOA solely as a way to keep people from trashing my property value.

Many folks who are upset with theirs simply didn’t do their homework when buying there home. Be sure to read the covenants, HOA rules, etc before purchase. Also a good idea to knock on a couple of your neighbors doors to introduce yourself and ask them about the neighborhood and HOA.

OP, I get where you’re coming from. But you’ve never experienced a few bad neighbors bringing down the entire value of the neighborhood because they live like slobs.

Imagine looking in a neighborhood to buy a home and one house has overgrown lawn, cars all over the yard, animals running, siding falling off the home, etc..

Even in $500k plus homes you still have people that have no basic decency.

I personally don’t mind paying for a good HOA.

Some situations can be alright. My parents live in a neighborhood where the HOA has no power except for landscaping common areas. They really do a wonderful job keeping the entrances/medians nice. Also, every 4 years, they collect an extra fee to have the roads resurfaced/potholes fixed. I think my parents pay $100 for the whole year

Their HOA was able to keep a developer from building several shotgun "nice" homes. If you live in the suburbs then you know the type of houses I'm talking about. Would have substantially lowered property values

Those saying that slobs/plebs can't afford the nice houses are ignorant. Money is never a determining factor in someones ability to function as an upstanding citizen. With social media influencers, drugs, etc....ANYONE can make enough money to be anyones neighbor and still be a douche.

My neighbors house is appraised around $800K. He refuses to mow his lawn, pick weeds or maintain general lawn care. The neighbor across the street took an extremely long time to get his $1m house under contract becuase people didn't like the site of the crap lawn across the street. Finally the HOA got involved and the lawn got reworked......the 1M house went under contract almost immediately.

Bought a house in an HOA and I wish it was stricter. Next house I'm buying is going to be in a super strict HOA, one that limits renters and actually forces people to mow their damn lawns.

The worst thing to a neighborhood is renters. They're trash.
