when did you realize you weren't as smart as you thought you were?

Mine was when I enrolled in uni for comp sci. When I learned how some of my peers and young kids were solving insane algorithms, or making crazy personal projects since they were 5, that's when I realized I'm just average and there is an enormous difference between those who are average and those who are actually smart. I'd say 95% of the population is average or a little above or below. Then 2% for flat idiots/ smart people and 0.5% for the actual geniuses/retards.

At one time I would watch films like “Superman” and thought that I was as smart as Lex Luthor. I always felt that I was a borderline genius. When I started going to college and got a C in elementary algebra and a C in Intermediate algebra after studying really hard, I realized I’m definitely not a genius.

Luckily it was pretty early on, like 9th grade. I was an academic big dawg at my chit public school, but then I went to a math and science magnet high school that basically collected big dawgs from all over the metro area. And I realized I wasn't so big in the grand scheme of things.

Grad school was where I finally hit my academic ceiling: failed all my classes, wrote a horrible thesis, graduated with a masters on about the minimum requirements possible. That's when I saw what some real fukking geniuses doing some work that I simply could never do; they could learn and utilize more information in a week than I could in a month, no question. Also found out that I'm not a very original or creative person; I get way too brute-forcey when I have to solve an original problem.

It was kind of like when a high school linebacker walks on to an SEC tryout and just gets smashed by all-state athletes. You realize that your talent simply isn't enough to go any further in that arena, no matter how much you work at it. And I took that with equanimity, cause I didn't have delusions about being a hot-shot supergenius or chit. If anything, I'm glad that I took that talent as far as I could and found out where the ceiling was.

The one talent I haven't explored but really want to is law. What got me with STEM was math (I'm not that great at it) and needing to have a thorough understanding of all the little details (I tend to think big-picture). I'm better at writing, analyzing and distilling down info than I ever was at doing quantitative chit, and doing quantitative chit got me pretty far in the grand scheme of things. Maybe I'd cap out at law early, maybe I'd have a genuine talent for it moreso than STEM. I don't know, because I've never been down that road. Couldn't afford it.

Its genetics. Often times those smart people are heavily lacking in many other areas like being attractive, having good hygiene, social skills and so on. There is a tradeoff just like with anything else. They are likely on the spectrum which is both good and bad. Life is balance

It doesn't really matter that much though. If you don't have motivation, good networking, and the ability to keep at it you will be managed by those who do regardless of how smart you are.

Average intelligence will not make a serious impact on the world.

Intelligent people have more motivation, and they are way more capable at solving problems than average intelligence people.

I learned when I was about 14 or 15. And learned to shut the **** up. Spent about 3 or so years pretty quiet taking it all in. It was very beneficial.

Sounds like a motivation problem, not an intelligence problem. I'm smart by any metric but engineering and comp sci doesn't get me hard. I prefer business problem solving and absolutely love coming up with solutions for complicated issues. Maybe you just aren't as into Comp Sci as you thought. Or maybe you are just average but I'm trying to be the silver lining.

It depends where you're at.

If you're an office bish, then showing up on time, doing your work thoroughly w/o mistakes, and not being a dink to your coworkers can take you a ways. Intelligence doesn't matter much in that environment.

In say grad school though, there is a huge emphasis on raw intelligence. Working hard on a research problem no one has solved before just means beating your head against a wall that a smarter person sees a way around. There's little collaboration, so you can't play nice with coworkers you don't have. You still have to work hard in that environment, but working hard without being smart is useless there. Found that out the hard way.
