Did the movie “Gladiator” exaggerate the malevolence of Lucius Aurelius Commodus?

Now I know it was a Hollywood movie for entertainment purposes and there is no claim for it to be historically accurate.

However, there are a lot of accuracies in it. With so many accuracies I kind of want to know to what extent they exist.

Now Commodus may not have been the best choice for succession, but I feel he wasn’t as ill willed as the movie portrayed him to be. Not even close.

I believe hè was more incompetent, not malevolent really.

Check ‘Roman Empire’ Season 1 (documentary about Commodus’ reign with interviews as well as acted bits) on Netflix.

Ehhhh yeah to an extent. Commodus had his quirks, and he was widely despised by the senatorial class. Accounts of his emperorship are heavily critical and biased as a result.

My take is the guy just wanted to be a Gladiator. He was insanely athletic and preferred it to matters of state.

My favourite Commodus "story" is when he gathered the limbless beggars of Rome, tied them together, and smote them whilst pretending to be Hercules fighting the Giants.
He practised the worship of Isis and even went so far as to shave his head and carry a statue of Anubis.75 5 In his passion for cruelty he actually ordered the votaries of Bellona to cut off one of their arms,76 6 and as for the devotees of Isis, he forced them to beat p289 their breasts with pine-cones even to the point of death. While he was carrying about the statue of Anubis, he used to smite the heads of the devotees of Isis with the face of the statue. He struck with his club, while clad in a woman's garment or a lion's skin,77 not lions only, but many men as well. Certain men who were lame in their feet and others who could not walk, he dressed up as giants, encasing their legs from the knee down in wrappings and bandages to make them look like serpents,78 and then despatched them with his arrows. They got his name right. That's about it. The real guy was fully endorsed by his father and became Emperor and he certainly didn't murder Marcus Aurelius.
