Just got home from the hospital last night
Hey Misc, what's up?
Crazy times--I can hear loud celebration for Biden out my window. I did not vote because I was admitted to the hospital on Monday night and didn't get out until yesterday night. Then again, I'm in NY.
Story time: on Monday the chronic slight swelling from bursitis in my left knee got radically worse throughout the day, just blew up, became super painful (could not move) and hot and red to the touch. Went to the ER where they drew fluid and found it was septic bursitis, staph infection.
I was told not to eat or drink, put on saline IV, and finally sent to the OR at 3 am on Tuesday. My knee was cleaned out and I was put on IV antibiotics. Unfortunately, the IV was not working well (it was excruciating because it kept leaving my vein and the antibiotics would infiltrate my tissue instead). So they switched me to a picc line. Now I'm home with crutches, giant knee immobilizer, and an IV infuser backpack hooked up to me 24/7 via picc line.
So that was my week misc, and if any of you are sad Trump lost, maybe at least you can compare that to my own experience idk.
Also, has anyone gone through anything like this before? I'm so freaked out because the doctor said it was a freak thing: a TINY particle of something could have gotten into my knee despite not having any visibly broken skin, gotten into the inflamed fluid in the bursa, and just started spewing bacteria.
I have never seriously considered quitting BJJ before but now I am, as it's such a breeding ground for staph and caused the bursitis to begin with as well.
Any kind words or commiseration welcome.

My home gym has MUCH superior hygiene practices. After corona I think I'll just train there and nowhere else.

Ask a hygienic looking person from your class to train with you at your home gym. I've always wanted to give martial arts a try. Corona has dashed those dreams. Stay safe OP

I took a step back because of all the scratches from uncut nails, gross hygiene people had on the floor, and all the above. I only roll rarely with certain people and look to do more judo.

Staph infection is no joke, I watched it immobilize someone fairly quickly. I watched someone else not get effected by it at all and they pulled out a chunk of flesh from their back.
You'll be fine, let your gym know you could have got it from there so that + coronovirus should increase the cleaning frequency.
Don't let this dictate your life, we all have our speed-bumps in life use this as motivation to come back even better.

I got staph once when I was in high school and wrestled. I had a small cut on my chin, and it got in through there. Scared me a bit, but aside from ringworm once after that, I never got anything else.
Best advice I can give is not to spend too long hanging around the gym chatting, wash your gi often (and have multiple), make sure you roll with people who have good hygeine and also wash their gis, andmost importantlyshower the moment you get home.

1. I always shower right away AT the gym so should I also shower at home?
2. If I mostly use one gi, but I always wash between uses, why is that bad?

1. I always shower right away AT the gym so should I also shower at home?

1) IMO, showering at the gym leaves you at the mercy of the cleanliness of the showers in the gym. I don't like it, but also I bring a towel to lay down on my seat in the car because I don't shower there and I change out of my gi. Also, 9/10 people piss in the shower. The other 1/10 is a dirty liar.
2) Probably best to get a second gi, for convenience more so than cleanliness. But truth be told, I imagine that there's a day every now and then where you might take that gi out of the dryer and it's not completely dry... But class is tonight so ya go anyway. Anyway, not the worst thing in the world. I know few brahs who don't always wash their gis, and that's another reason they always recommend to have two... Because brahs really do be out there like that.
Truth is that the most important factor that's a bit out of control is the hygiene of your partners and how well they clean the mats.
But you will find that as long as YOU exercise proper hygiene the only time you'll run into something like that is if you're extremely unlucky
