Doctors Want Gyms to Close lmao

As the number of new coronavirus cases top 100,000 in the U.S. for more than a week, health experts are warning that the situation will get drastically worse if government officials don’t implement restrictions.

Dr. Uche Blackstock, CEO of Advancing Health Equity, is calling for a unified response, telling Yahoo Finance Live that a mask mandate is needed, and although it’s not likely, a national lockdown would be a “wise strategy” to mitigate the virus’ spread.

“I think it would be dramatically better [if we were to have a national lockdown]... We essentially need a collective response to the crisis we're in right now to see any change in the numbers that are growing exponentially,” she said.

Blackstock is also advocating for a mask mandate as many forecasts are for the outbreak to escalate through the winter months. Colder weather will likely drive people indoors, where the chance of transmission is much higher. A recent study by researchers from Stanford University and Northwestern University listed restaurants and gyms as potential super spreader sites, naming the two venues as places where people are at the highest risk of contracting COVID-19.

“We haven't seen the worst of it. it's going to be a long, hard winter…,” Blackstock said. “In order to see any significant decline in cases, we're probably going to need to have some non-essential businesses, restaurants, and gyms close for at least four to six weeks, if not more.”

The rapid rise in coronavirus cases is playing out in a similar manner to the warnings we’ve been hearing from health officials for months. The U.S. set another record for daily confirmed coronavirus cases on Wednesday, reporting another 144,000 infections, while the number of COVID-19 patients in the ICU hit the highest level since May.

Thirty-five states are now considered hotspots where stay-at-home orders are necessary, according to the Brown School of Public Health COVID-19 Risk Level Dashboard. To be designated as a hotspot, there are more than 25 positive cases per 100,000 people. States currently with the highest number of cases per 100,000 people are North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wyoming, and Wisconsin. The risk assessment map shows stay-at-home orders are advised in an additional 13 states, plus the District of Columbia.

Because of these elevated levels, Blackstock said it’s time state and local leaders make “some really hard decisions” in order to get the outbreak under control.

“The strategy for outreach and messaging is going to be incredibly important at this critical point,” said Blackstock. “I think we need to recheck our priorities. I understand that businesses are going to suffer. We need to find a way through a stimulus bill to help support them and support their workers as well, but we need to really get through this with as few deaths as possible.”

we've had a mask mandate in place for months here, we've had business of all kinds closed down and others building shields all over their stores, don't seem to make a damn bit of difference

people are going to do in their free time what they're going to do and they are not going to respect another unenforced "lockdown", and they shouldn't

Literally this. I'm rarely if ever 6ft close to anyone in the gym, always wear a mask, wash/sanitize my hand about 5 times during my workout, and wipe down the equipment at every contact point.

My gym has stats on display of all of the cases in gyms and there are practically none across the country.

you laugh but these kooks are literally driving policy in states like CA.. we have an objective case rate in our county but by the time it goes through the state, we have an "adjusted case rate" that weights positive tests in "disproportionately affected" communities aka the poor parts of town where they flout the rules anyway

My gym has been open the second they were allowed to. They take your temperature at the door and you need to verbally agree to no symptoms. To date I haven't heard a single case popping up in our gym and it's probably the busiest one in the area. Working out with a mask isn't that bad either, you just need one that's sturdy enough to not collapse and suck in when you breathe. I bought these black ones off amazon and they work legit, and do not hinder my ability to breathe at all, even when running. When you use the chitty blue masks they like get wet and then all floppy. When I'm on the treadmill it legit like collapses in on it self and covers my mouth and it makes it kind of hard to breathe not gunna lie.

They go around the gym and make sure you have your mask is on and that you're covering your nose. You get two warnings, and the third time they kick you out for the day. If you get kicked out more than 3 times they suspend your membership for a week/month etc. One manlet tried to come in without a mask and they were like no you can't be here. He then got all mad and pissed, started throwing chit and screaming, and then left.

it does exist. there's legit studies on it. systemic racism in healthcare. which is pretty serious cause people that don't get the help they need die or don't get treated. it's like a white doctor is more willing to help a white person cause they look like family sort of thing or white people get rushed in ER faster than natives or people with color

out of all the systemic racism stuff people go on about the systemic racism in healthcare is the most serious and matters the most but is the one overlooked

just an example

patient a, white, dude has serious health issue, goes to a white doctor, gets referrals to specialists and prescriptions, gets treated and is healthy again
patient b, brown, has same health issue as patient a, goes to same white doctor, doesn't get ****, lives with chronic worsening condition

I'm sure the fact that minorities tend to be more obese and have a whole host of other unhealthy lifestyle choices has nothing to do with the fact that these people die from poor healthcare more often then other groups. Once again instead of promoting a healthy lifestyle here you are attacking an invisible boogeyman. I'm sure this will solve all our issues and everyone will become healthy once we rid healthcare of racism. Give me a break. I'm a dude with an ethnic name and of muslim descent and I got super great healthcare here from white doctors (I suffered from asthma for a long part of my life). My grandma got a great surgery from a white doctor. Father who's brown got a great surgery as well. Also not all doctors are white. Not all nurses are white either.
