Did an entire semester network systems class in 3 days. (dear diary)(blog)

I procrastinated on my online classes and only did one out of 17 chapters of online work for one of my computer classes. Realized I only got a month left so I better start working on it. Well I realized the class was pretty interesting so I bought 4 cases of diet coke and went back to work. Spent like 16 hours the first day. Then did a 12 hour day. Today I finished the last 2 hours up, all I have left is the final exam. I feel like I got ripped off with this online class virus schedule bullsheit. I might take like 6 classes next semester if its all online again. Or instead of college might take one of those online full stack developer 3 month boot camps. Has anyone ever did one of those? I wont be paying for it, the government will pay. I got like 10 months of GI Bill left. I feel like I could learn all this better on my own tbh. It feel like a waste of money.

I don't mean learn on my own entirely. The good thing about having a course schedule with things they teach is it gives structure. There is so much stuff to learn I don't even know where to start on my own. And I would obviously be reading what other people wrote in books or taking other lessons offered in udemy or youtube so I would be learning from others still. I mean on my own as like not taking college classes with a professor.

I procrastinated and got very lucky. I need to work on it. Its just hard when I sit down at my computer for the class and its so easy to get distracted by looking up stuff on google.

I remember my network exams. Write a reliable data transport program in C on paper. BRB lost without my step thru debugger and variable watches

Yeah. Sometimes I sit behind my desk to study but after couple minutes I find myself miscing.

Off the top of my head, its probably used in back off / collision protocols.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_backoff

That makes sense, but I still don't like it. Damn I better stop procrastinating because the probability stuff is like Chinese to me.

Unless you're actually lacking the knowledge those bootcamps might give you, I wouldn't go the bootcamp route. The whole point of you even being in university is to get that diploma. Actually getting an education is a side effect. I'm pretty sure a university degree would hold more weight than a bootcamp certificate to the HR weenies.

Having said all that, a lot of fields (especially tech fields) are better suited for the online format. So your experience is not surprising. I was in school for computer science back when online learning was still called "distance learning", and I took an elective class in web development. It was mostly online as all the notes were put on the web but there was a lecture. I literally only went to the first day of class, the midterm, and the final and still got an A.

For most of my CS degree, I found showing up to class was a waste of time for the most part. Even for some of the high theory classes like automata theory. They should have it so you just pay to take exams, which I guess is what certification programs are actually are. It's just too bad certs don't hold as much weight as college degrees, and this probably won't change any time soon. Just another thing to thank the baby boomers for I guess.
