Reps to misc tradies for help on this table

I’m taking the lacquer finish off, and I found that the sides are a different wood/grain than the top. The top is birds eye maple, and the sides seem to be oak or mahogany painted over (as I found when I stripped it). A woodworking company is speaking with me tomorrow about whether to replace the sides with birdseye or repaint the sides. I don’t have the prices yet, but I’m not sure which way to go regardless. How much of a difference does it make to match the sides with real birds eye vs keeping what is already in place?

The way its made, and the materials used makes me think the top is a thin verneer and oak was used on the sides as it is much cheaper, and thicker therefore protects it better from chipping etc.

Its very unlikely you can find a maple burl like the top to match that is the same dimensions as the oak. If you can it wont be cheap.

I dont see why you would want to change it, its a work of art m8!

I was surprised to find the sides were different. I’m willing to spend on matching sides to a point. I know they grade on fewer birds eye spots, and thats about it (my knowledge of birds eye maple).

The top is solid birds eye maple as far as I know, cut into 2 parts. There is a third (extension) as well. The table splits to fit it in. I’ll have the top examined though.

Better late than never. It took a long time for the restoration due to supply chain issues regarding finish materials. I’m happy with it, though I will eventually need to do something about the scratches on the center plate.
