OIL PAINTING brahs - come check out my tranquil winter morning painting

I painted this yesterday morning in approximately 2 hours in order to prep myself mentally for a lot of work I had to accomplish. I wanted to paint something cold and quiet, both to reflect the impending change in seasons and to quiet my mind.



Above and beyond painting in order to calm myself, the challenges I set for this specific painting were: trying a new way to paint evergreens, creating the illusion of chimney smoke, and flicking a thin white paint all over the canvas after I had finished to create the illusion of early morning snow falling. The latter was the toughest. I had to fight through thoughts that I was going to potentially ruin the painting.

As I've mentioned in previous threads - if you want to paint like this, you 100% can. I started from nothing less than 2 years ago.

Hope this brings you a bit of peace of mind this morning during these uncertain times.

I know my tree isn't great. Admittedly, I rushed through it a bit as I was eager to finish.

Tf you talking bout? The tree is my favorite. Love how it looks like it's snowing. Did you use a toothbrush and white paint to splatter on it?

Amazing! How did you get good so fast though? Only 2 years mean you are naturally talented at painting. Can you draw?

I was never a painter, clumsy as hell with the brush. I was good at drawing as a kid and each year, I think about going back to it, but I always postpone it

What I did at the very end was use a white oil paint that I thinned out with linseed oil. I dipped the tip of one of my fanbrush's bristles in a bit of paint at one time and used my palette knife to 'flick' the paint on the canvas. It worked best when I laid the canvas down on a table and flicked from above. I did it ever so slightly so I wouldn't create big splotches of white paint.

Oh, and I also recently started watching Cobra Kai. I remembered there being a miscer that had that in their sig and I forgot it was you. Really great show. I was really surprised they were able to revive that series in such a quality way.

I'll say this - my major passion in life is the arts, primarily songwriting. I've learned to play over a dozen instruments over half my life. I built a recording studio in my house where I write, produce, record, and mix all of my music over 4 projects. Nothing ever came naturally to me and I don't really buy the idea that artistic talent is 'innate' in any way above and beyond the love you might have for it which will translate into a more 'natural' drive to better yourself. In the end, consistency and practice is all it is.

I bought myself a Bob Ross master paint kit almost 2 years ago. I simply followed along with episodes of The Joy Of Painting to get the hang of it. Eventually, once I got the individual pieces down, I started creating my own from scratch. This was my 75th painting. My goal was to paint once a week and, so far, I've been meeting that goal. It's gotten easier and easier over time. Some of these techniques you need to experience in order to get. It's a wet on wet technique, where you're constantly applying thinner paints to thicker paints, and you really do need to get that consistency correct or else you will just, as Bob said, 'mix mud.'

If you started today, there is absolutely no reason why you wouldn't be where I am in 2 years. I had zero art skills before. As I mentioned, my thing is music. I was never a painter, a good drawer, any of that stuff.

Thanks! Yeah, I've done the wilderness camping in this weather, when it's not full out intense subzero winter, but a bit of snow. It creates this blanket of calm over the landscape. Where I live, our winters are brutal. The early December weather is truly the calm before the storm.

I grew to love the cold on the frigid glaciers of Alaska back when I was a soldier.

Best sleep I ever had was in a -40F sleeping in a tent in -9F ******t. So peaceful

Thanks a lot. That was really my overall goal for this one - to create something soft and peaceful. As I mentioned in my OP, it also helps to quiet my own mind and put me at peace, as cheesy as that sounds. This was always my ultimate goal when it comes to painting, to be able to just pick up my brush and paint something relatively quickly (more or less 2 hours) as a mindful experience. My paintings also tend to go with the seasons.

Location: Toronto. It gets pretty brutally cold in TO as well, doesn't it? I'm just outside Ottawa.

Snowtrekker tent with Titanuim wood stove crew. Bivys are fine, but for long term trips, nothing like -30 outside and sitting eating bacon in your underwear at 80 degrees.

A bit more time to set up and tear down each night, but makes life real enjoyable.

Id have something a bit lighter like that, but not being mountainous we can afford a bit more weight while on snowshoe. The 8x10 tent is about 16 lbs, the stove eight and will hold wood fire for about three to four hrs. Fourdog UL2 titanium. UHMW toboggan makes pulling easy.

I have an international too. Great stoves.

1 lb tarp in summer.

Coincidentally, I actually hung up another winter scene I made last year in my bathroom. So, I pretty much stare at this painting every morning while I poo at 6:30am like clockwork.

I appreciate the interest but I'll have to decline. I'm really busy at the moment and am having trouble finding the time to work on my own stuff. I have a few records on the back burner that I need to go into and finalize all the mixing and editing. Story of my life, really. The to-do list never ends.

As always brah, another good piece. I really like the foggy effect on the rear tree line, it really gives the picture depth. It reminds me of the short cartoon 'The Snowman'..

The only thing id comment and it by no means takes away from the picture, but IMO the fence towards the left looks a little two dimensional. I think its because the post is not upright as it would be for a bend in the path.

I've been thinking about getting into Pixel art landscapes but I suffer from paralysation from overthinking as I've never drawn before so your posts always gives me inspiration.

They're really starting to pile up so I may consider getting rid of some one day. I've never really been interested in selling paintings if I'm being completely honest. While I do like potentially spreading the joy around, I'm really only pursuing this activity for myself. I really like learning new skills and trying to get the most out of my life, and painting is a small part of that. But, to answer your question, I think eventually I'll have to. As I mentioned, they're really stacking up, and my wife sometimes get annoyed (lol).

That's a really good point about the fence. I need to invest in a new easel because it's very hard to paint near the bottom with the easel I have. Even as I was nearing the bottom of the fence line it was really difficult to get my knife in there. I sometimes gently take the canvas off the easel and lie it flat on a table when I want to paint something near the bottom. Good eye!

As for your interest in pixel art, I'd say just go for it. That anticipatory anxiety is what really makes it difficult for people to take that initial plunge. As you mentioned, it can be paralyzing for many. My best advice would be to just dedicate a few hours on a weekend to something. Just give it a try, be confident, and don't go in with too many expectations. Even if you're not 100% content with the final product, know that it's a hobby where you'll get better every time, and you really do learn from your 'mistakes.' That's how growth happens.

When did you start learning instruments? Did you teach yourself. I want to learn piano but I never learned any music as a kid and I don’t have time for lessons so I would need to learn on my own.

I began playing the guitar at 15. I got really into heavy metal and wanted to learn. It was a thing all my friends and I were into at the time. I taught myself to play all the instruments I know how to play. For the guitar, I learned by ear and by reading tabs online (tablature). For piano, I bought myself a keyboard when I was 16. The goal was to learn how to play video game music. At the time, I had played Silent Hill 2 for the first time and that game really affected me. I loved the soundtrack, particularly the piano reprises, and I wanted to learn them. For the piano, I learned 100% by ear and never learned to read sheet music. I would listen to the song and try and figure out how to play it on the piano. Back then, there was no Youtube like there is now. It's such a wonderful time for aspiring musicians at the moment because you can find someone playing almost any song on Youtube and just follow along.

It's possible to learn to play piano just by listening. I did it. What I'd recommend is to get yourself a keyboard - you can find a cheap-ish 66 key casio type keyboard on classified ads for like 40$. Those keyboards have a bunch of sampled instruments built right in which is super fun because you can play strings, organ, etc. Pick a song that isn't too difficult, like moonlight sonata, and follow along with a Youtube video. Practice, practice, practice. You'll get there. It's never too late to learn.

have you ever tried it?

it really is a lovely quiet calm when there has been a big snow dump and the traffic noise drops to near nothing. at night it doesn't really seem full dark because of all the outdoor lighting reflecting off the snow. i like shoveling snow then (up to a point). never even really shopped for a snow blower. i hate the noise, though they aren't as bad as leaf blowers.

for me in MI it was just too dark and dreary for too long. the first month or two was fine. by the end of february i am over it.
