Meditation - how has it affected your life? [NOT A SCAM]

Until about a month ago I was 100% convinced that meditation is esotericism / astrology / MLM pyramid scheme **** tier.
then i read up about it some more & found an app (fitmind) that uses and explains meditation practices and its benefits in scientific ways. i.e. meditation can effectively 're-wire' your brain, aka the field of neuroplasticity.

I'm only a month in and I already feel improvements in my abilities to focus at 1 specific task at a time & be less overwhelmed by my thoughts and emotions.
anyone in here meditation-crew? since how many years do you practice it and how would you describe your experiences with meditation, brahs?

I do it a few times a week. Helps me slow down my thoughts when they're racing, effectively making me less reactive (I like to pretend).

It proved to me the optimal experience in life, and helps with conscientiousness and enjoying work, without forcing anything.

I did a lot more than most people. Started just a single session first thing in the morning, and I eventually tried some extended sessions, up to a month at a time. Extremely hard to exercise the self-control to only meditate for 18 hours a day, except it made me feel like more of an expert at the practice. I could access the results more reliably and faster afterwards.

I think you do not need these and do need to consider physical support. Mindfulness - the value of this practice is mindfulness, not any of the mystical stuff they talk about - really does help your brain. You can find similar results from endurance exercise, music, and other activities where you spend extended attention to something external to yourself and somewhat 'naturally' alive.

+1 on this based take about mindfulness. it's really about feeling present in the moment and allocating your full awareness to a task/situation.
unfortunately i think meditation has a bad rep because of the overlap with f*gs and single moms talking about energy bands, soul, nature etc.

I have done a little bit of meditation. But have been practicing more mindfulness and breathing exercises. Thought it was complete BS for years up until the last few months. After giving in and actually trying it, it really does help. I was surprised. Breathing exercises really seem to help me the most, but then at the same time I have put more effort into that then meditation.

The breathing exercises have also seemed to crossover and benefitted with weight lifting and running.

I have also tried eft tapping a few times and that also really seems to help when I have done it, but I haven't been consistent with that either.

I have done meditation every day without fail for 1.5 years. A lot of guys will laugh at you but it's because they have not looked into it to discover the true value of it or simply because it's too hard and they would rather masterbate or watch netflix.

For me I have noticed:
I can handle high stress situations, I am detached, focused, calm, cleaner mind, greater clarity, aware of my thoughts emotions, increased in discipline, do not have thought diarrhea and many more.

Currently I wake up every day at 5:15am rain hail or shine for almost a year. I gym 3 times a week, meditate each morning for 30 mins, yoga 4 times a week in morning after completing 8 months of yoga 1 hr a day in morning, quit alcohol all year, quit meat only eat seafood, do cardio 3 times a week, work in a high intense job.

For me it was a smart investment of my time and I can see already I am miles ahead of people. When they are upset with life they hit the bottle. I instead meditate or grind through it with a gym workout.

Peace

Really mirin the self improvement set up. Been trying to figure out what to add to meditation and the gym so yoga might be it.

For me the benefits of meditation are the same as above. I just do 20 mins breathing exercise 1x a day. For the longest time I didn't think it was working but after a while I realized how little things didn't affect me anymore...traffic, women, work "stress", waiting in line, annoying people. These things still happen and I still get frustrated, but I dwell on it a lot less. Since meditating, I don't have those days where things build up. They simply happen and I keep it moving.

In social situations I move from moment to moment, as opposed to worrying about if I just did something awkward. Before I'd still move on but it was in the back of my head...now I get over it so quick it's like it never happened.

Overall there is a strong detachment to things I used to worry about and I'm a lot lighter. Also taking a deep breathe has become a reset that instantly relaxes me. Highly recommend doing it and sticking with it.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Interesting thread, brah. I went through a phase of meditating every morning and found it really tough but worthwhile. ‘Catching’ yourself thinking is really interesting philosophically.

I just stopped doing it for no real reason. I’ll start again tomorrow thanks to this thread.

I heard somebody say that after an hour or so they once felt a wind flapping about them. I want to get to that state.

Has been helping my anxiety and depression big time. Protein shake in morning, then meditate immediately. I like to use the Headspace app, which my doc recommended. I tend to be able to focus more, am less reactive. Thoughts are just thoughts, theyre not you. When someone is angry, sad, or depressed, that is a feeling or emotion, and just a thought. Many people are consumed by their thoughts (especially in these forums), but being present in the moment really helps you hate life less, from my experience lol. Still a work in progress but its been very helpful so far. Do it brah! Also, Witcher 3 is a good game^

I started with Power of Now and done 2 Vipassana retreats so far, but I don't really stick to it(to truly claim you do Vipassana you need to do like 2 hours every day MINIMUM).
First change I noticed was way less inhibition. Started being much more forward with how I feel. Both in a good and bad way.
Another thing I notice is that it anchors you to the NOW of things. instead of getting swept in fantasies of wanting something or avoiding reality you're just here. Sorta frees up useless hamster spinning in your head when you need to act.
Eckhart Tolle's stuff actually helped me shoot better at a shooting range, though my better is just about everyone's average. My trigger for that was listening to the silence between sounds, as weird as that sounds.
Lastly it helps my balance. I've got repeating ankle sprains to the point of falling over randomly, and being mindful of the sensation and position of my body actually reduces cases of it happening.

A downside:
Makes me notice my tinnitus more.

Damn. I should start again.

And how would it be a scam when all you need is a book, or not even that. You could just start with a free youtube video.

Went Big on the Buddha, kept my mind straight and free and mostly thoughtless. The purity of life was something to behold. Then I got off track for a few years and started thinking some pretty dark, negative stuff. Trying to get back on the train again.
