Do you agree with the death penalty?

Seems like the US is the last Western country to have it.

The arguments against it are being mitigated through advanced technology. Specifically killing innocent people (which has happened).

I don’t support it. It was outlawed once, and I feel like it will be again in our lifetime. Of course I could be wrong.

There’s plenty of people I could care less if they die. And probably should be offed. But fundamentally, no, I don’t agree with any government having the power to take someone’s life.

Yeh I fully agree with this.

Indisputable, concrete evidence for premeditated murder and the like, then goodbye life.

Any case where there was a shred of reasonable doubt at trial and wasn’t clear cut, then no death penalty.

I’m all for it to keep mass murderers, serial rapists, or ****philes off the streets. It should be used to keep the rest of the population safe.

I'm for it but maybe all the states should be able to sentence is life. Separate three-judge federal panel to determine if death penalty is warranted. If the state prosecutor wants death, the three judges review all evidence and the trial process. Only unanimous agreement results in death.

In theory, yes. In practice, it:

1. Doesn't deter crime
2. Costs more than imprisoning someone for life
3. The government sometimes kills the wrong guy
4. Has been turned into a big money grab like everything else about the justice system

Doesn’t make sense from a rehabilitation standpoint to not have it. If the point of the criminal justice system is to be a deterrent and rehabilitation organization, then it should most definitely exist. Some people will never not be a threat to society.
It needs to definitely be a swifter process though. No living on death row for 10+ years.

The only thing wrong with the death penalty is the fact that it takes an ungodly amount of time to process one of these cases and while they wait - inmates live a relatively cushy lifestyle AND segregated from gen pop.

Let the worst of the worst be eaten by the system - much cheaper and more effective.

It doesn’t deter because people suck but also because death row is prison on easy mode. 100% serious.

Also it’s not a “money grab” that people can appeal multiple times and it simply takes a long fukkin time to process every fukking criminal out there let alone doubling back for a re trial or appeal.

As for OP, I am absolutely for it provided there is undeniable empirical evidence. Some people are so rotten, be it by nature or nurture, they simply forfeited their right to live here any more. It comes down to “is there ANY hope that this person could actually positively contribute to society?” If the answer is no... they’re gone too.

No, for a few reasons, but the main 2 are it is more expensive because of a lengthy appeals process that drags out years and cost more money than it does to keep them incarcerated for life, and then the fact that 1 in 10 is innocent. That is a pretty big margin of error.

Only if the evidence is overhwleming.

I became pro-death penalty when I saw just how badly heinous murderers wanted to get out of it. 99% of murderers prefer life in prison over death - that was enough for me to support the death penalty.

This is the only reason I'm against it. But if it's 100% sure someone did a horrendous crime then I'm all for it. Hard to decide.
