Why are we attracted to pretty faces? [srs]
Both men and women.
I cant absolutely understand why someone fat can be perceived ugly: fat = much higher change of health problems and having health problems reduces survival chances.
But facial symmetry, jawlines, eye shape etc, do they really serve a purpose ?
The only 2 things I can logically:
a) For muscles and specific bone structure and proportions, especially height: locomotive advantages to fend off predators, other humans and catch prey.
Despite these locomotive advantages, modern life favours more braincels as we have mastered the food chain and most high pay work today is high brainpower driven. However, we haven't really fully evolved past the previous to start "appreciating" this.
b) For beautiful faces etc I guess it is a mechanism through which some people tend to be more popular and form tribes/societies around them. And we thrive in societies.

Symmetry indicates health just as much as being in shape does, probably more so because it’s all genetic.

Is there any evidence of non-model tier faces having higher chances of death from comorbidities though?

Just the opposite
Men are attracted to the body, which is why we try to change ours
Women are attracted to the face, which is why they try to change theirs (make-up)
Of course having both is best, but these are our main focuses

But i thought about it when i saw some uglies dominating their sport. Now, ugly may be harsh but comparatively so. I feel like for looks theory to work all good looking people would have to be best at their industries. Not every ceo, athlete, scholar, etc. Is a top tier model
So how could you say they have better "genes". If your definition of good looks is "genes" maybe. But stick them in a classroom and some nerd outsmarts them and does better.. how is that better "genes"? More like one looks good and the other does things better
Walker buehler is an example. There are 750 mlb baseball players in the world. Already a really exclusive group. How many men in world? For simplicitys sake lets say 4 billion.
Hes a top 50 player of the 750, yet i wouldnt consider him a top model based on looks.
Further when you say "genes" what does it mean - hormonal profile?
If we took walker buehlers test (ok looking athlete) vs. A really good looking but gay model.
I bet wed fine buehlers is higher. So, again, idk what exactly the influence is
You say "good looking" = something like higher test
But based on the example i just provided, i dont think so.
I guarantee if walker buehler posted his face on misc hed get like 5's and 6's
And this is me keeping it kinda surface level and not going into depth because i dont want to rewrite it again

“We appreciate beautiful things not for their utility only, but also for what they are in themselves—or more plausibly, for how they appear in themselves.”
- Roger Scruton
A big factor may simply be man's desire for order and harmony. Symmetry and proportion are commonly found in nature, as well as art and architecture - or at least they were before some of this modern "art" became the norm.
A symmetrical, proportionate face is nice to look at and an easy indicator that a person has good genes in general (not always the case, but there is a correlation between facial attractiveness and intelligence for example)

Very few traits are sexually selected simply for visual pleasure, there is often an intrinsic benefit to “beautiful” traits which we have been programmed to seek out.
Deep eyes and protruding cheekbones = protection and insulation
Round, high cheekbones = insulation
Light skin/hair/eyes = better vitamin d photosynthesis
Dark skin/hair = better efficiency/performance in high sunlight
Curly hair = better cooling
Strong brow/chin = high test crew
Small nose/chin = youthful, fertile

There’s a part of the prefrontal cortex that specifically functions to recognize faces
So it’s not so much as recognizing attractive features as it is recognizing features that are familiar to you. This is why women like guys who look like their dad to a extent
Imo if you have high standards you likely grew up with attractive parents/siblings

Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

ROFL if you think you are good looking. Also, haven’t even factored in intellect and charm.

1. Judging attractiveness may just be a heuristic for judging gene quality (AKA "a mental shortcut that allows people to solve problems and make judgments quickly and efficiently"). It might be a quick and easy indicator which works well on average.
2. Looks are the first impression you get of somebody in most cases, and there's a bias toward heavily weighing first impressions
3. Good looking people tend to be received more warmly (look at studies of babies reacting more positively to conventionally attractive people for instance). That could lead to a positive feedback loop where good looking people also become better socialized, on average
