goodnight sweet Goldeneye Cradle

The celebrated Arecibo Observatory telescope in Puerto Rico, which once starred in a James Bond film, collapsed Tuesday when its 900-ton receiver platform plunged 450 feet (140 meters) onto the radio dish below.

Just for the record, this observatory was decommissioned a few weeks ago because some of its supports had failed - again. This thing was an obsolete money sink and people were tired of patching it up for no ROI.

It has been a hazard for a long time.

RIP Arecibo.

yeah I'm not even aware of what state it was in or whether it still had some purpose tbh

just saw the images and it seemed so familiar due to the N64 classic and the movie and got catapulted back to my childhood

straight in the feels, was a pretty iconic setting

The really fukked up thing is, the Chinese have built one 3 times the size of this thing which is also more sophisticated.

Now we have to come to terms with the idea that China could make contact/detect something that changes the world fundamentally. If they don't like the implications, we may never know about it.

Just saw it on the news and they didn't mention anything about goldeneye and I'm like wtf that's the satellite dish from goldeneye, why talk about the story without mentioning where most people would recognize it from? Love the movie and the game.

Well Arecibo was rented out to researchers for its entire life. Reserving a slot to use it for a week or two was probably nothing new, and likely didn't cost an astronomical amount. Especially if they filmed during scheduled maintenance, upgrades, etc.

Lol tfw you get so good you catch up to him and empty 100s of rounds into him while watching him run around, stained red as the computer enables turbo mode for him to try and open a gap between you for the script.

Game was so good. The game was originally supposed to be on rails, a guided shooter like Time Crisis. Multi-player was also a last second addition, legit a few weeks before the code went gold they patched it together - ended up being what made it so replayable. This is why they didn't have an animation for walking when you're crouched - you just slide around - you were never meant to see a game model crouched and moving!

YT history of Goldeneye N64 for some good videos if you're curious. It had an amazing journey from concept to finished product.

Repped! I'll check that out. I was a huge Goldeneye addict, I don't think I spent more time on any game since then. Maybe COD: Modern Warfare (the original). Trying to beat all the levels for the cheat codes was the best, some were pretty tough if I remember correctly. Invincibility was real hard, beating the Facility on 00 in like 2:30 or something I think.

Ugh that was another annoying one, especially when she died from the computer exploding from gunfire. Lots of rage.

Just looked up the levels list. I remember beating the game on Secret Agent, the medium difficulty. I think I got stuck on Statue, the halfway point of the game trying to beat it on 00 mode without cheats. I'd always get real close to beating the level, but just couldn't make it past all the endless wankers with shotguns that came for you when you had to backtrack to the beginning of the level after finding Trevelyn. I think I got as far as the end part where you rescue Natalya but would end up losing before the finish.

That game was so ridiculously hard on the hard modes for the last and bonus levels. I unlocked the bonus levels with cheats and would try beating them without cheats. The Aztec Complex and Egyptian Temple were a fkn bitch even on the easy Agent mode without cheats. Someone had to be really damn good to beat levels like that on 00 with zero cheats because your character died from just a few shots, not to mention the ammo being so limited you had to be careful not to waste it being overly aggressive on offense.

Great game though. Multi player mode, and even taking turns with your bros playing the main single player missions made for some great overnight hangouts. I always liked turning the all guns/infinite ammo cheats on single player levels for 00 mode and trying to beat levels with different weapons/stratgies than were intended in the original levels. brb playing the Caverns level using nothing but the Slienced D5K or KF7 Soviet.

I visited that place 3 years ago, in Puerto Rico that is an actual attraction with some space museum next to it.

It’s actually kind of neat, they have pictures of James Bond on it, but they said Broseman used a stunt double that whole scene on it from far, and that he was at the bar where I was having coffee and pastelitos while the stunt double was running around lmao
