Lived in Ballantyne for a while.
Charlotte had a good nightlife. Uptown was good for the clubbing scene, NoDa was awesome for kitschy dive bars.
It was really weird with the living pockets. You could be in a wealthy area but it look ghetto af. Or vice versa.
No clue what it's like with the pandemic, but if you're around the area go to Cabo Fish Taco.

It is in North Carolina.

Lived in Uptown for 2 years.

Depending on what you are moving there for. Very young professional/business oriented. Epicenter is awesome and now they have a minor league baseball team and the panthers and minor league hockey so there are sports. I didnt hate it. I just didnt have a reason to stay nor a job good enough for me to consider finding another place when my lease was up. Close to SC and as said above, Ballantyne is nicer, but not actually Charlotte. Its south and more "expensive".

Noda is hipstery, but my ex and I loved how quaint it could be. There are some great smaller music venues, then you have where the Basketball team plays and there is an outdoor venue close by. Same with Nascar and Concord Mills Mall


If you can afford it, I would do it. I moved back to Raleigh because its

1. Home
2. More of a hockey presence(I play and the Pro team is here so I can see my team play them)
3. I like Chapel Hill and Carrboro the best(close to Raleigh)
4. 3 Major colleges in the area so when going out was a thing you could hit UNCCH, DUKE or NCSU to go out. All within 20-30 minutes of each other



Governor was reelected and is a joke, so don't expect things open anytime soon. Current stay at home order until after the holidays. Can't be out passed ten. Masks are mandated and have been in stores and everwhere ETC

If you are mid 20's to 40's I would probably say Charlotte though if you have good employment down there.

Grew up there. Visit often. It’s super liberal now. Hipster neighborhoods. Tons of breweries. Anything that’s trendy, the city does. It’s gotten pretty expensive to live there. Lots of wealthy areas but also some ghetto **** too. Great vicinity to do day trips and weekend stuff. Hardly anybody who lives in Charlotte is from Charlotte. Construction all over the place. I’d still live there but I wanted a smaller city.

A few years ago I lived around NC in my car. Remember partying in a place called NODA or some chit like that. Super hipster district of Charlotte. Lots of hbbs with no bras walking around, fun bars

NoDa is fun, uptown is okay...strip clubs aren’t full nude

If you live in NoDa becareful because its a gentrified area but many hood people still live there.

I like the demographics and the scene...as stated earlier its really diverse and mainly a population of young adults

My wife lived there for 4 years and I lived in the area for a few. I love Charlotte, lots to do uptown, tons of breweries , good restaurants, etc. Great city to day drink in and football game days are a blast. Good mountain biking and hiking, etc close by. Beach is only a few hours drive. There are some ghetto areas on the outskirts but I never had any issues with any of that. The city is mostly pretty nice, clean. Tons of younger people. Downsides, it’s getting expensive. Also,job market in uptown is really banking heavy. If you want any decent sized affordable house your going to be living in huntersville, or across the SC border in fort mill / rock hill. I’ve got a condo near the panthers stadium looking to sell next year.

I live in the north burbs. Its a decent sized city with plenty to do and is pretty new/clean. Don't really know/care about the nightlife since I live a typical white collar/suburban family existence. Real Estate is cheap for a major metro. Taxes aren't terrible. Lake Norman is awesome, but my favorite thing is 2.5 hours to the mountains and 2.5 hours to the beach and it has a Goldilocks climate. Access to a major airport hub is a huge plus. City has had huge growth in the past decade and the infrastructure is trying to play catch up (interstates, public transportation, etc.).

Lived there for 20+ years. A city that has seen steady growth for 30 years, yet no one talks about it.

Pros:

Really good spot if you are in Finance(Take away SF/NYC, Charlotte is next in line). Underrated if you are in Tech.

Noda, Plaza Midwood, Montford, South End are all great areas filled with mid 20s somethings getting a career going. Ballantyne and Myers Park areas are great for raising families. I second Shysty's comment on Noda though. There are shady parts.

Pretty intelligent people, as NC has very good colleges (Duke, Wake Forest, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State)

Fantastic Breweries, and underrated restaurant scene. Soul Gastrolounge is still one of my favorite restaurants in the world despite living in NYC for 3 years. The Moffits have one of the most underrated restaurant groups in the entire country as well.

Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets to fill the sports void. Panthers typically attract a ton of attention as they have good years every now and then. Hornets will be hyped this year because of the LaMelo/Gordon Hayward connection.

3 Hours from the best beach city in the US (Charleston,SC), 3 hours from one of the best mountain towns (Asheville), and 4-5 hours from the Great Smoky Mountains, which is a fantastic trip. Not to mention 3 hours from the best white-trash beach city in the entire world (Myrtle Beach). The Outer Banks is also an incredible getaway.

US National White Water Rafting Center, Lake Wylie, Lake Norman, great running trails....underrated amount of outdoor activity.

Cons:

Secluded. There are some viable roadtrips, but Charlotte is the biggest city in its area for a while. You would need a flight to NYC, Miami, DC, etc. However, Charlotte Douglas Airport is legit, and prices are always solid for those weekend getaways.

Its been growing for 30 years, and continues to, but theres tons of construction, and considering how much I hear that it is growing, it just doesn't seem like it goes at the pace you would expect it to. Compared to bigger cities, there is simply less to do. What Charlotte has is good, but if you are used to big city amenities, it may not cut it. This is why I probably won't move back to be honest.

Prices are getting expensive. I remember paying $600/mo for a 1br while I worked and went to UNCC. Those days are gone. If you are in finance/tech, you're good, but that is such a narrow window of industries.

Thats basically it. I tell everyone who is considering a bigger city to absolutely consider Charlotte. However, if you are going from a big city to another, and still want big city amenities, Charlotte could very well fall short.

Live in one of the SC suburbs instead.

charlotte is the definition of urban sprawl. dominated by a few large employers specifically BoA and wachovia. The city center is small, some of the edge areas are appealing but a lot of the population is spread out and it feels like you have to drive 30 minutes to get anywhere. That said, its a pretty nice area and the housing is affordable.

Fort mill / Tega cay is nice but rock hill SUX.

I'll also add, Charlotte's road network is a fuking spiderweb. There was no thought or planning put into it - forget about anything resembling a grid outside of up town. Its easily one of the hardest cities in the United States to navigate.

Not bad. No water, and the Streets are bizarre all go in circles.

I never really put the 2 and 2 together after living in Las Vegas and NYC. Somebody's child definitely led the charge on this city's infrastructure.
