Build a Custom Calculator app?

I sell insurance and one of the products I sell uses a rate book. The Price someone pays is based on their age, gender, tobacco use, plan type and how much coverage they want.

Is there any way to build an app for IOS where you can enter these fields and it will do the math for you instead of me having to do the math?

I could easily use an excel sheet, but I dont want to do that because I am usually with these people at their homes, not at my office on a computer.

Just curious if anyone happens to know where I could build something like this easily that wouldn't cost me anything (just my time making it)

Simple yes. I'd do it in javàscript. You could also just get a cheap tablet and use Excel/LibreOffice.

If he is building it for iOS it would be better to code it in Swift.

But honestly it sounds pretty simple, could probably find some on fiverr to code it fairly cheap.

yes.

but the truth is, the math is very easy and I can do it in my sleep. I want to give this to my agents who are too dumb and price people incorrectly. Asking them to use excel, or do anything thinking outside the box, is more harm than good.

It's has to be user friendly app that they can't screw up

Flutter (by Google) stable version came out recently so it's relatively new in the community.
React Native (by ********) and Xamarin (by Microsoft) are the biggest alternatives, but they are arguably worse because of how they handle native rendering (slower, less customizable and a different method).
I have experience in all 3 (mainly Xamarin), but I'm learning Flutter rn so that's why I took up this mini project - as a practice.

But a word of warning to who it may concern...
Dart (Flutter's pl) is not a language you wanna learn as your first programming language. It's so different from any other language I've ever used, so it won't give you a good programming foundation.

Damn I never heard of all 3 of them. I should ask, who did Flutter, React Native, and Xamarin replace?

And do React Native and Xamarin use Dart or they use their own programming language?

not worth the effort of setting up for iOS programming + developer fee to publish it

just whip it up in javascript and host it on a github page, and access it through safari on your phone. you'll just need internet to use. a lot more simpler this way.

Check out my edit btw.

These 3 are the biggest cross platform frameworks. This means that you don't need to write separate code for each operating system, as was done in the past (or by big companies that can afford to hire 2 separate teams). If you don't use a cross-platform framework, you'll need to use something like Native Android+Java for Android apps and Swift/Objective for iOS.

Xamarin: C#/XML
React Native: Javascript/HTML

So basically, these 3 are like C++ / Java compilers for writing programs, as to writing smartphone apps?

I thought smartphone apps were also written in C++ or Java heh.

Boy all this new stuff.

You can also use something called codename one for writing cross platform apps in Java. I used that years ago, but quite frankly, it's chit. I'm sure there are cross-platform frameworks using c++ too, albeit not as popular tho

Damn, well I'm prolly an old pup. I think back in 2012, C++ was for Apple phones and Java was for Androids.

But now, both can be for Dart now?

Ah well I was a CS minor.

You could be thinking of Objective C? It's very similar to C++ and uses the same file extensions.

Correct. It's way easier to make apps now days because of that.

Heh. Sorry to pick your brain all night. Is it possible to just make something app-like on a website, and then have it viewable on the phone?

And the website-applet can be programmed in something like PHP or ASP.

I always wanted to do 1 with 2 drop-down menus and a database that it pulls data from.

For example, the 2nd drop down menu doesn't exist until you select the 1st drop-down menu. And the 2nd drop-down menu choices depend on what you choose on the 1st drop-down menu. Once both drop-down menus are seleted, a list of items is pulled, preferrably from a non-open source database.

If you were coding something like that, what programming language would you use?

I don't know much about mobile-friendly websites, but If you wanted to make a mobile-friendly website that is viewable on the phone and you want to use PHP for it, you could use the code to check if the client is a phone (like $detect->isMobile()) and then choose the correct resolution in your stylesheet . css. Although, you could also easily use something like Javascript or Python with a "responsive design" for something like this as well.
Edit: So apparently content="width=device-width is a thing in HTML...

Personally, I would use Javascript with React . js for this because of it's powerful/vast libraries and cool looking pre-made ui components.
