Considering Moving Back w/ Parents (Willingly)(Advice)(SRS)

Some of you may know 2 years ago I bought a house. Very happy with the place/neighborhood but I bought it with my cousin who I don’t want to live with anymore

Anyways we’re refi-ing soon so my mortgage will drop. I tried getting him to take his name off with the refi but he’s being Jewish about it and not wanting to, he says for tax reasons. But in all likelihood as a realtor he eventually wants to rent this house out while he acquires more properties with his fathers wife. He works for her.

Honestly I just want my own fukkin place to payoff and live peacefully, but at this point I don’t think he’d consider selling and splitting the equity so the only option I have is to refi with my name taken off and he buys me out

Meanwhile I’d move back in with my folks who now have an empty bedroom cause my brother moved in with his girlfriend. They said they wouldn’t charge me rent but I offered to pay.

So if I do follow through I’d be able to save a good amount of money within the next year or so until I have enough to put a downpayment on a new place.

Thoughts?

if living at home for a year allows you to put a down payment on a home, that's an easy call. im stuck in a $1400/month rent; i should be able to buy a house next year but still, that rent adds up fast.

There’s no reason for me to move back in with my folks and I genuinely like my current house but I don’t see my cousin splitting anytime soon. And I’d rather not live with him anymore. I can’t furnish how I want with him here and I’m not gonna invest in the house unless I know I’ll be here long term but he won’t leave

That’s what a coworker suggested but I’d feel more comfortable saving up for a year in addition to that money.

I have a good relationship with my parents also I’ve been perpetually FA for the last 3 years so I don’t see myself dating a woman in the near future lol. I honestly don’t mind moving back in, just to save for a new place. My mom just asked that I clean and help around the house lol

I moved back in with mine. Granted I have a finished basement to myself which allows me my own bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, laundry room, entrance/exit.


I have a good job. Salary, benefits, 25 year pension, etc.. but quite frankly I don't want to be renting atm so I am going to take the hit and stay here for another year or 2 and continue to save to the best of my ability.
I don't think I would have done it without the space to myself as mentioned at beginning of post. The only thing is that I refuse to date while being here. I will just remain single for the time being.

Do it bro. My parents are half way across the world and getting old. I moved out when I was 17 (military) and barely visited them. Now that they are old, I wish I spent more time with them.

I say do it. You get to save money, eat some home cooked food and get to enjoy the time you have with them while they are still alive

If you don't mind being with your parents, then go for it. I've been staying with mine since April b/c of the pandemic, and I probably annoy them more than they annoy me Lol

But to play devil's advocate... if your cousin bought you out, would that be enough for say, a 20% down payment on a new home (to avoid PMI)? If so, I would look for a new house, because paying your mortgage =/= to paying rent. If it was a choice between renting an apartment somewhere vs living with your parents, then the decision is easy (live with your parents to save money), but if you have the finances to buy another home, you should do that. Mortgage rates are extremely low these days - my brother bought a home not too long ago and got 2.2% on a 15 year conventional loan. Only downside is that houses are selling like hot cakes right now so it's a little hard to look for the home you want for the right price - but not impossible.

Do it for about a year and save up enough to move out. I did it earlier this year because of COVID and online classes but I’m moving out next month. I about doubled my money and would say it’s worth it but I couldn’t imagine staying any longer especially when you’re in your mid 20’s.
