Why do Roku remotes crap out in cold weather?

I have a Roku hooked up to a tv in my garage. It got down to 20 degrees last night. When looking at the remotes light through a camera, I don't see any light. I put in some room temperature batteries and I'll see a dim and dimmer light, then it goes dark again. Can someone explain this phenomenon?
